Born on 30 December 1819 in Neuruppin, Prussia, Theodor Fontane (German: [ˈtʰeːodoɐ̯ fɔnˈtaːnə]) was a German pharmacist, novelist, poet and proponent of literary realism. His most renown works include "Effi Briest", "Irrungen, Wirrungen", and "Der Stechlin". Fontane's style is primarily characterized by detailed descriptions of settings and close examination of the sociopolitical problems that shaped his time. In 1892, Fontane was diagnosed with a severe case of cerebral ischemia. He died on 20 September 1898 in Berlin, Germany.
