While both parents had problematic responses to their theory that their daughter was a lesbian, I find the words they individually used at the beginning of the movie and the epilogue scene at the end of the movie to be very telling. At the beginning of the movie, the mother blatantly lets out the reason why everyone gathered in the living room and was far more vocal about Megan needing to "cure her lesbianism" (ugh, thank goodness in the end Megan is able to live her best life as a lesbian with Graham). The father in contrast has a more scared, anxious approach. At the PFLAG meeting, although clearly uncomfortable and weirded by doing it, Peter introduces himself to the room as the father of a lesbian teenager at the center of the front of the room. Nancy, meanwhile, is sitting in one of the seats further down with a hat and extra garments to conceal her identity as best as possible, and groans in anger at her husband's actions while also trying to pull her hat down to hide even more. Very, very telling.
