I used to hate Melle because she's too much of a goodie goodie on screen but when I rewatched the film, I think her character is just as complex as Scarlett's. I think her relationship with Scarlett is the most interesting part of the story. She is the only person who brings out Scarlett's truly good side and Scarlett is the only character she is able to comfortably show her more cunning side. She is often described as not having Scarlett's strength but watching her character get fleshed out in the story, I can say that she is probably the bravest character in the film. Even though her body is frail, her heart is resilient and loyal. She's the one who is able to sacrifice herself and is willing to get her hands dirty for the people she care for even in her weak state. God I love her.
