Originally a Major of NERV, the events of SEELE's assault and the reformation of the organization as NERV Japan led to Misato becoming a Major General and Commander of the new branch. After Gendo's disappearance and the dissolution and reformation of NERV, Misato ended up being put in charge of the newly created NERV Japan branch on top of being promoted to Major General.
