There are absolutely zero analyses for this guy even though we do have enough material to make some so I’ve written up one so here it goes : ISFJ core 9 sx/so Douglas Graves is best understood as sx/so 9, Si>Fe>Ti>Ne, rather than simply being reduced to a spineless or uncaring father. Yes, he is unquestionably a doormat for Renee, but his passivity comes from attachment, dependence, and conflict avoidance, not from an absence of emotional investment The sx9 element is especially obvious in how deeply he merges with Renee. She is the dominant force in their marriage, while Douglas accommodates her decisions and relies on the relationship for his own psychological stability. Without his wife, he is shown as someone who can quickly fall into self-loathing and collapse. His sense of self is therefore heavily intertwined with the people he is attached to But the SO instinct is important, particularly after the updated scenes. Douglas genuinely cares about his role within his family. The birth scenes make that clear. When Ashley is born, Renee is ecstatic in a way that feels comparatively performative, while Douglas is visibly sentimental and genuinely touched by becoming a father. The same contrast occurs when Andrew is born: Renee’s reaction is essentially, “Ugh… it’s a boy”while Douglas is still visibly leaning toward his newborn son with a quiet, genuine fatherly expression. He isn’t performing an idealized image of fatherhood; he simply seems sincerely moved by seeing his child >That makes the later balcony scene much heavier By that point, Douglas is overworked, psychologically deteriorating, and apparently on the verge of jumping. When he speaks to his son, his mistake with Andrew’s name can reasonably be interpreted as dissociation or severe exhaustion, rather than evidence that he simply never cared enough to know his own children. Most importantly, he doesn’t take the leap. The presence of his son appears to be enough of an attachment to pull him away from it. For an sx9, that is extremely significant: attachment itself becomes the tether keeping him connected to life His relationship with the children also isn’t completely devoid of mutual affection or respect. Even when Andrew and Ashley are angry with their parents, Andrew still refers to Douglas as “the old man” and tells them to let him rest when they wake him. There is distance and resentment, but not necessarily the perception of Douglas as a completely emotionless stranger This doesn’t make Douglas a good father. He was negligent, passive, and ultimately morally compromised, and his inability to assert himself allowed Renee and their circumstances to dictate far too much of the family’s life. But moral failure and emotional absence are not the same thing Functionally, Si~Fe~Ti~Ne also fits this pattern. His identity revolves around familiar structures—his marriage, his family, his home, and his role as a provider. His Fe manifests less through overt warmth and more through accommodation, maintaining harmony, and orienting himself around the people closest to him. Ti remains secondary, while inferior Ne becomes particularly apparent when his established life collapses and he struggles to envision alternatives rather than spiraling under uncertainty. So Douglas’s tragedy isn’t that he never loved his family. ~It’s that he genuinely loved them while being profoundly incapable of acting independently on that love His attachment is real. His sentiment is real. His paternal affection is real. But his agency is weak enough that he repeatedly allows stronger personalities and circumstances to determine what happens to him and his family. That combination deep attachment +merging+social/familial orientation+passivity+conflict avoidance~is precisely why sx/so core 9 fits Douglas well
