I don't understand why people will see the most obvious SP7 character and type him as anything but that simply because he's a realistic example and not some cool mastermind. Even worse are the SX8 votes. Like, what? Everything about him points to a neurotic conservation instinct. Throughout the series, Bellick demonstrates a remarkable tendency to adapt himself to whatever circumstances maximize his chances of survival and comfort. His loyalties shift. His attitude shifts. His alliances shift. His values appear flexible. What remains constant is the attempt to secure a favorable position for himself. [Side note: This lack of core principles and values, constantly shifting his beliefs and adapting to circumstances, reflects the id-oriented mindset of the E7. As an Id type, the E7 has no loyalty to principles, but rather to whatever maximizes pleasure. This is especially the case for the SP7, who readily utilizes and abandons principles depending on their material and pragmatic usefulness. The E7 is a charlatan for a reason.] He is clearly characterized by this neurotic opportunism, and we see it throughout the series. He constantly seems to be scanning for leverage and advantages, scanning for ways to avoid being the one who loses, and for ways to maintain access to resources, status, protection, or comfort. Naranjo described the SP7 as a subtype characterized by strategic acquisition and survival-oriented cleverness. Unlike the more idealistic or visionary expressions of the E7, the SP7 develops a pragmatic realism. They become highly attuned to resources, favors, alliances, and practical advantages because these things represent protection from deprivation and access to more options (gluttony). The gluttony of the SP7 has a more materialistic and pragmatic emphasis than the more idealistic SX7 and SO7. It's about more concrete pleasures, material acquisitions, better positions, etc. It is a gluttony for shortcuts that promise the satisfaction of one's desires. Bellick embodies this repeatedly. He is constantly trying to figure out where the incentives are, where the risks are, and where he can place himself to come out ahead. Another reason SP7 fits him well is his relationship to fear. Bellick absolutely fears vulnerability, and he responds by maneuvering. The guy who is constantly seeking deals and escape routes out of fear clearly reflects the fear-driven orientation of the head types, yet he gets typed as a gut type. Beneath his bluster, Bellick appears profoundly afraid of ending up powerless, abandoned, trapped, or deprived. Yet instead of confronting those fears directly, he manages them through opportunism, maneuverability, and strategic adaptation. Finally, we also notice that Bellick tends to employ the rationalization strategy of the E7. The E7, in general, is a very "inconsistent" character who changes principles and perspectives depending on which one supports their current interests. Even when their unreliable changes are pointed out, they are able to justify their current position using "good reasons." They "contextualize" it. This is the cognitive mechanism that allows the opportunism to remain psychologically acceptable to the SP7 (and E7 in general). At its core, that's what rationalization is about. So, rationalization is basically a sophisticated process whereby conflicting realities are reorganized into a narrative that preserves psychological freedom and avoids internal restriction. The individual does not need to admit, "I changed my principles because it benefited me." Instead, they can reinterpret the situation ("The circumstances are different now." "This is actually justified." "You don't understand the context." etc.). This is exactly the case for Bellick. What is striking is not simply that his loyalties change or that his positions fluctuate. What stands out is how naturally he seems able to inhabit his current position as though it is entirely reasonable, even when it contradicts positions he previously defended. There is very little sense of being trapped by his own past commitments. Instead, there is a continual reinterpretation of events that allows him to move toward whatever currently serves his interests. For example, when he occupies a position of authority, he can justify behavior from the perspective of authority. But when he loses authority, he can justify behavior from the perspective of survival. When he needs allies, cooperation becomes reasonable. But when allies become obstacles, different considerations suddenly become important. The rationale changes as the situation changes. The result is a character who can appear surprisingly sincere despite obvious inconsistencies. He is not necessarily engaging in deliberate deception at every moment. Rather, he genuinely seems capable of reorganizing his understanding of events in ways that support his present needs and objectives. Bellick is one of the most realistic portrayals of the SP7.
