In the first couple of chapters it's quite evident that Sadie is quiet, meek, down on herself and much more isolated. She is not the action-oriented, initiative-taking person that we see in the later chapters. This is because of what the O'Driscolls did to her, her husband and their cabin. These behaviors fit classic disintegration to 5. She was relegated to a much weaker position in life, having lost everything and thus retreated.
