What personality type is Robby Keene? Robby Keene is an INFJ personality type in MBTI, 6w5 - sx/sp - in Enneagram, RLUEN in Big 5, ESI in Socionics.
First I want to clarify that this is just my view of Robbys personality and that he is hard to type because he is very unapproachable and he does a lot of the thinking process by himself, so it is hard to know which internalized functions he uses. Nevertheless and moreover after Season Four I am convinced that he is a Ni dom. A Ni dom interprets social relationships through meaningful actions that affirm the quality / strength of the relationship. Robby often interprets how situations are connected because as a Ni dom he makes decisions based on extrapolating future implications but in an unhealthy NiFe way: • Firstly Robby did not tell that Miguel gave back the medal of honour, because he assumed that he would risk the relationship with Sam. • When he came back from prison to see Sam, he saw her and Miguel in a “karate exercising position” together. He immediately interpreted a deeper meaning to this and believed that her relationship with Miguel was the reason why she stopped writing. I think that a Ti dom would have wanted to find out the logical reason. But Robby directly assumed the reason must have something to do with Miguel (NiFe). • When he went to the Cobra Kai dojo to stay with Kreese, he talked with Tory and said to her that he doesn’t belong here. Due to his Fe he perceived the atmosphere and emotions of the other students. He immediately felt that he wasn’t accepted by the other members. • Often mentioned: the scene where Miguel and his father hugged: Robby directly interpreted that his father likes Miguel more than him. But this is not a Ti conclusion. It is not a logic consequence that you choose someone over another person just because you hug them. Again he connects a situation through NiFe with a deeper meaning (Ni) and people (Fe). • When he worked in the Larusso company, he adapted his personality. I don’t say that an ISTP or ISFP doesn’t have the ability to adapt to his environment. But I think that they don’t see a reason why to change their personality in every new environment so drastically (ISFP due to their Fi and ISTP due to their Ti). Most INFJs tend to adapt to the people around them and take their values and moral view due to their high Fe. • When Sam was drunk and didn’t want to be seen in this state by her parents, Robby understood her emotions quickly. He took her to his fathers house, because he still believed in his good side. This also was not a logic decision (Ti). It is not logical to bring the drunk Sam to the “rival” of her father not to mention how irresponsible and negligent Johnny behaved towards Robby. Why would he be different in this situation? But NiFe people idealize people and see their potential. Therefore they tend to also see their good side and give them a second chance. • When he was in prison, he was harassed by his fellow inmate Sean. But he still chose to follow the Miyagi-Do training, that karate is about self-defense. He still tried to better himself by serving community service to shorten his sentence. I´m sure that an ISTP would have not behaved this way. According to TiSe it would have been logical to defend oneself immediately, to react directly in the moment. • During Season Four we saw that Johnny (who is an ISTP) had massive problems to understand the Miyagi-Do message. For himself defense was not logical because of his TiSe functions. But Robby understood the symbolism and hidden message and adapted this lifestyle far away from logic or the present moment. He wanted to reach a bigger purpose for himself and to improve. This is the contrary to an impulsive logical reaction. A Ni dom defines true knowledge in terms of understanding how meanings, perspectives, or standpoints can be manipulated or changed (mental constructs are real but arbitrarily defined, therefore a change in definition can produce a change in perspective). A Ni dom values knowledge/objects that have personal symbolic significance or predictive power. Self-Defense gives the fighter more time to react and to analyze the opponent. With self-defense you have more time to hide how you really fight. You put the focus away from yourself but on your opponent. Moreover is a person who overuses self-defense often underestimated. That is why the Miyagi-Do methods give people a predictive power which is very attractive for a Ni-dom.
Biography
Robert Swayze Keene is Johnny Lawrence's estranged son and Daniel LaRusso's former top student at Miyagi-Do Karate. He later joins Cobra Kai by Kreese's invitation after believing that both Johnny and Daniel have betrayed him.
