evb must be so sick of my comments, but i pinky promise this is the last one (it’s just a copy and paste or a comment i put down earlier as a response but i do want people to read, as i’ve made arguments for Fe and here’s one for Ni). i actually think the “there’s no Ni at all” claim misunderstands what Ni looks like when it isn’t grand or visionary. Ni doesn’t have to manifest as ambitious foresight or a calculated master plan, it often shows up as a rigid, internalised narrative about who you are and how your life will inevitably unfold. sophie consistently operates from a consolidated identity pattern, “i am not someone who is chosen,” “i do not belong,” “this is my place” throughout the season filters events through that lens. when she isn’t included in the will, she doesn’t investigate because it confirms an existing belief and she doesn’t want to destabilise herself further as she even stated in episode 8. that’s not blind trust in structure, it’s narrative consolidation. her decision to attend the ball also isn’t chaotic novelty-seeking too (which would support a Ne grip argument), she agonises over it and frames it symbolically, imagining what it would feel like to be seen as someone who belongs (episode 1). that’s not random escapism. even her fatalism with benedict, insisting it will never work despite external approval, reads less like present-tangible thinking and more like a fixed projection of how her story ends. a Te-driven character would leverage violet’s support pragmatically, sophie rejects it because it conflicts with who she believes she is allowed to become. so the debate focuses around whether her conformity is anchored in respect for established structure (Si) or in protecting a fragile, future-oriented identity narrative (Ni). dismissing entirely ignores how consistently she frames choices in terms of what they mean for her long-term sense of self rather than simply what the current hierarchy dictates. Fe argument below i want to clear a misconception, Fe doesn’t mean visible caretaking and big sacrificial gestures. creating a graceful excuse so francesca can leave without attention? that’s Fe. not exposing lady penwood’s abuse to avoid destabilising the household? that’s Fe. not burdening others to help her escape jail? that’s Fe. none of those are grand gestures. they’re all quiet adjustments. Fe isn’t “look how much I care.” it’s “let me stabilise this environment.” Fe can look restrained. ESPECIALLY in more reserved types (INFJ, ISFJ), it’s not bubbly or demonstrative, it’s controlled and socially aware. i feel like a lot of people in the commments aren’t aware of how Fe operates in INFJs. that’s why when you look out for grand gestures of Fe and can’t see them you default to ISTJ. further on regarding sophie’s compliance reading less like Si-based comfort with structure and more like Fe-based self-suppression to preserve relational equilibrium is that her continuous observed pattern is not “this is how things are done,” but “i will not destabilise others, even at my own expense.” that distinction makes people-pleasing through Fe more plausible than passive structural conformity through Si. she repeatedly suppresses her own desires to preserve relational stability - not exposing lady penwood for her abuse, not questioning her demotion to maid because it was argued by lady penwood it’d be what’s best for her sisters and herself, not burdening others to help her escape jail, considering leaving to protect reputations, her reaction upon hearing anthony speaking to benedict too - realising she’d be coming in-between his family etc. there are so many examples of Fe i don’t see how people can’t see it. especially when she helped francesca regulate herself at the funeral and also had a one on one conversation with her to make her feel better. her decisions are consistently filtered through harmony management and self-sacrifice rather than procedural loyalty or system preservation. that pattern of internal narrative restructuring (Ni) combined with relational self-suppression (Fe) makes INFJ more coherent than ISTJ.
