Personality

What personality type is John McTiernan? John McTiernan is an ISTJ personality type in MBTI, 5w4 - - in Enneagram, in Big 5, in Socionics.

The only Die Hard movies I like are 1 and 3. Now I know why, because they are the only ones directed by him. In the first Die Hard specifically, there is so much Si, so much attention to detail. One little tiny bit of dialogue in the airplane at the beginning ends up being a crucial plot point later on. That being to "make fists with your toes" to ease jet lag. This leads to McClane being barefoot the rest of the film, which Hans uses against him by shooting the glass, injuring him severely. A couple more examples are the picture frame Holly pushes down that Hans finds later, and the watch Ellis gives Holly which comes back later on. Even the most minor details seem to come into play at one point or another. They are almost always logically connected and coherent, this is his Te. His Fi comes into play with emotional payoffs. One example is the exchange between Al Powell and John McClane near the end. Ne is creativity, but being inferior Ne, he isn't overly imaginitive which makes the action more grounded, while still entertaining in Die Hard's case. 5w4 is the "philosopher". While on a superficial level, the Die Hard movies seem like dumb action movies, they actually do contain some thought provoking moments. Die Hard is a social commentary on how ignorant and ill equipped society is for an event such as a terrorist attack. The police play right into the terrorists hands, the media just exploit the situation, and everyone is hostile to John, the one guy actually helping. McClane is just as much fighting against those outside the building as he is against the terrorists inside. It shows when things hit the fan, you can't always rely on others, often they will be against you as well, just when you need them the most. Pretty underrated director in my opinion, especially considering the famous films he has directed.
