What personality type is Charles Vane? Charles Vane is an ISTP personality type in MBTI, 8w9 - sp/sx - 873 in Enneagram, RCUEN in Big 5, SLE in Socionics.
I was initially a bit surprised he wasn't typed as an ESTP, but upon reflection, I would say that ISTP makes sense for Charles Vane. He does display the abruptness and practical reasoning of an Se dom, but I think that's largely a mask he puts on to intimidate his enemies and impress his allies. We see him using his Ti-Ni axis throughout the show, for example when he's able to plan and execute the escape from Nassau using a fire ship, but this is best illustrated by his choice of words in his letter to Eleanor Guthrie... "As far as you and I, I was warned about you, warned you would betray me. I'd hoped you and I shared a love to make such a thing unthinkable. I'd hoped those warnings were wrong. But I know you too well, so I prepared in case they were right." That is absolutely the thinking of a Ti dom with a well-developed tertiary intuition. He was able to successfully outwit Eleanor here because she underestimated his Ti-Ni intelligence. Vane is fiercely loyal, and deeply desires loyalty from others (Fe inferior), he wants to be free, and to enjoy his life without the cruel hand of authority weighing him down (Se secondary), but ultimately, he's a man who's in his element when he thinks before he acts and is able to plan out a logical course of action (TI dominant).
