What personality type is Andy Dufresne? Andy Dufresne is an INTJ personality type in MBTI, 1w9 - sp/sx - 153 in Enneagram, RCOAI in Big 5, LII in Socionics.
I see people argue that making a plan isn't inherently Ni. But what IS Ni is being able to have a plan within another plan. I think an ISTJ would have still have made the library and done the best he could within the parameters of the prison system, however I dont think an ISTJ would rebel. They are possibly the most obedient and orderly type. An INTJ is far more likely to play the opera music and try to escape. While I do think Andy was sincere about bringing books to the prison, something quite Fi, I do largely believe that his librarian/banker identity is a front that exists to conceal his plans. Ni users think FAR into the future. Sensors are generally better at short term planning. An ISTJ would have probably made a better library than Andy did, but Andy had other things in mind. I like the nod to this when he says to other prisoner: "You'll like that one, its about a prison break". Clearly even when Andy is sorting books and doing taxes, he still is thinking about his long term goal. An ISTJ is more concerned about efficiency and practicality than freedom. Ni-Te retains practicality, but adds an ideal innovation to it. This is why INTJ are known as "The mastermind". They can have grand schemes. Fi is inner emotional investment, something heavily shown towards the end when (spoilers) Andy slyly shows he is actually a better christian than the hypocritcal bible thumper who lectures the prisoners is. Andy has a personal moral compass and doesn't accept the "because I said so" morality of the status quo. Even the revenge by letting 'Mr Obtuse' take the fall is very Ni-Fi motivated and Te-Se executed. But I really think freedom is the main issue here. If anything, without sounding too harsh, I think an ISTJ is actually more likely to rat someone out for escaping than escape themselves. I agree with the idea others suggested. If he was ISTJ he would be trying to prove his innocence til the very end. An ISTJ would have faith in the system, where an INTJ would not. Andy didnt care about proving innocence, he just wanted freedom.
Biography
Andrew "Andy" Dufresne is the main protagonist in The Shawshank Redemption. Andy is sentenced to two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her lover, a crime he truly did not commit.
