The conflict of votes on this page is somewhat disappointing, a little funny, and definitely expected. It is clear that Te is very misunderstood, which is why I keep getting told I am an ENTP or even an INFJ. I am going to try and shed some light on Te as a “nice” Te user who is becoming a computer scientist. Te does not make one any less curious, that is just Inquisitiveness in Big Five. As a dominant Te user and a primary Inquisitive, I want to know, learn, discover, and discuss everything about everything. And I truly mean everything. The difference is that Ti users want to learn and discover for the sake of discovering (which is what makes them more likely to be scientists) and Te users want to do it to, well, do something with it (which is what makes them more likely to be engineers or managers etc). To explain the difference, think of mathematics. An XNTP would be tinkering with mathematics to see what they could uncover because the uncovering itself it what they seek, even if the rule they discover will be later on used practically, while an XNTJ would do it for a goal and try to discover something they see can be applied practically, even if they end up changing multiple fields and discovering other things that were not initially part of the goal but came to be important to it. Especially an ENTJ, who is an extroverted judger and seeks to make everything applicable and accessible for the “tribe”. Yes, it is true that Te strives to put together and make useful while Ti strives to pull apart and make consistent, but both Te and Ti users can develop both functions and use them frequently. What it comes down to is what your judgment is ultimately focused on—the self or the tribe? When you are trying to learn something, figure something out, is the learning your goal or your tool? I admit, if you think everything you learn can be used as I do, it is going to be very difficult to tell whether you're a Te user or a Ti user. But you can see the difference in where the individual's focus lies. And Carl Sagan was all about coming out of the purely theoretical to connect with the “tribe” and make the theory accessible and popular. As for being nice and likeable, niceness and likeability have nothing to do with cognitive functions, not to mention everyone can develop all functions. Those should not be one's criteria for typing, or else the whole purpose of cognitive functions is lost.
