tbh i feel bad for Monica. like she was a shitty parent but its not rlly 100% her fault, she was bipolar and incredibly unstable. i think in the times she did come back to the family she did try to make them happy and be a good parent (though she didn't do a good job as she focused on what the kids wanted to do rather than what was best for them) but most of those time were during manic episodes so when she went into a depressive episode she could no longer do those things and became reclusive (through no fault of her own). in one of the episodes when Monica leaves even Fiona (i think, maybe Debbie?) says that Monica said she left because she thought they were better off without her, which was unfortunate but true, and not because she genuinely wanted to leave again. unlike frank (who was not only a bad parent but also a bad person, whose problems were generally his fault as they were controllable he just chose to not control them) i believe that she was a genuinely nice person with a good heart and intentions, though those intentions tended to get her children and/or herself in trouble. even-though i do believe Fiona (and the rest of the kids) had every right to be mad at Monica for leaving i think they should have been sympathetic to her disorder. her relationship with Ian is also a very sweet relationship as he is the only one who really understood her, as they both struggled with bipolar, she was very supportive of his sexuality, career choices, etc (again even if she didn’t go about it the right way she was always trying to be supportive). so yeah i dont think she is the horrible person people make her out to be i think she was just unstable and struggling (the thanksgiving episode) which left her unable to be a good parent, but i do agree that she was an awful parent
