When his partner, Roy Earle mentions that its the LAPD's job to only keep the supply and distribution of morphine "manageable", Cole is disgusted by what he says and pulls the morality card. His scrupulous attention to detail and strict adherence to military protocol during Okinawa got his entire unit killed, and nearly even himself. He knew he did nothing to deserve that Silver Star. He's celebrated as a hero but was actually a coward who simply survived. His self-awareness of that and his desire for redemption through police work is very E1. I don't see him having a 2 fix though. Cole was more concerned with rising through the ranks of the LAPD and became disconnected from his family at that.
