What personality type is Harry Du Bois? Harry Du Bois is an ENFP personality type in MBTI, 7w6 - sx/sp - 748 in Enneagram, SLUEI in Big 5, IEE in Socionics.
A lot of great analyses here, and the consensus is already in place. Something that could further help understand Harry's mind is actually a prominent feature of ENFP's reality, which is taken for granted by us and rarely ever explained outwardly, so it is not very well-known. This is the ENFP's tendency to imagine becoming (to the point where they *actually* become) other things and other people, at the expense of being their actual "selves"-- a spatially and temporally limited, preconditioned, *ascertained* human being. This is mostly due to the Ne-Fi-Te stacking. Here, we don't have someone who knows they are someone distinct and profound (Fi) trying to discover (Ne) where to be, how to be, (Si) and what to do (Te). Unlike INFP's, ENFP's do not look for their identity. Instead, they fathom possibilities (Ne) and get excited (Fi) and this excitement is identical to having *already* inhabited this realm of possibilites, so it is not a matter of merely stepping forward into a different plane. They're already there. ENFP doesn't try to figure out what to be, because they don't need to; their ego *becomes the possibilities themselves*. The psyche may have different reasons why they are excited by possibilities, and with enneagram 7, this reason is essentially the avoidance of existential pain. After waking up, Harry imagines himself to be very many different people with many different viewpoints. Admittedly, this disorientation of identity has reached such heights because of his severe drinking, yet even before the events of the game, Harry is portrayed as a man who charges-- no, *throws* himself into the world (Ne-Te, tertiary driving him to burnout and consequent substance abuse) in an attempt to escape the looming weight of his past failures, real and imagined. This "throwing oneself" into the world for the sake of outrunning the consequences of your past actions, and the finesse of embodying different political/moral views, characteristics, identites so masterfully that you truly start to believe it, is the reason why Harry cannot be a Te dominant (ENTJ/ESTJ) or Te auxilliary (INTJ/ISTJ) type. The constructed identities in the form of the rock star, the super detective, the hobo cop, the soulful citizen, the perfect husband, the holy mother, are the makings of a mind that has done this construction a thousand times before, at the benefit and misfortune of its host. Harry has effectively embodied escapism itself, and this shows what I believe to be the psychosis of pure Ne. This is where the cognitive functions are no longer "cognitive", and cannot hold the hero function down, and the result is the man dropping to the ground and his cape howering still. The wings of Icarus still rise to the sky, imagining there is still a body holding them together. Yet they cannot "look" down, because even if they had eyes to do so, they would notice that Icarus had been long gone, and they will fall as well. For real this time. If we go by the definition of psychosis, in the sense of a somewhat Freudian psychosis, then his cognitive functions could be said to impose themselves upon him. In this definition of psychosis, the parts of the un/consciousness that have been ripped away revolve back to the ego and "torments" it. They "happen to" the ego, they are not "it", nor a part of it. This could provide a different perspective in how we view the skill window of the game, and help us understand how the exacerbated alienation of his already conveniently fractured mind could be understood from a psychoanalytic sense. In writing this, even, I'm thinking about how much I see myself when I look at him, and how I even enjoy being like him and how I am *proud* to liken myself to him because "he's cool"; he's liked, despised, admired and vilified simulatenously-- he gets your attention, at the very least. I am projecting my identity onto him even while I am writing this, because I too want to be cool, because I don't believe myself to be cool at all, unless I am likened to someone cooler than myself. Tit for tat. Maybe all ENFP's are one single mega-being.
Biography
Lieutenant double-yefreitor Harrier "Harry" Du Bois is the sole player-controlled protagonist in Disco Elysium. Directly preceding the in-game events, Harry and the Major Crimes Unit were called to Martinaise to investigate a report of a hanging. When they arrived, Harry drove off the rest of the unit, screaming at them to "fuck off" because they were "cramping [his] style. He was the "Detective God." The rest of his tirade were variations on "Fuck everything. All will burn. Detect or die!". He then went on a several-day suicidal bender across the district. He harassed the patrons at the Whirling-in-Rags, waving his gun in their faces and making graphic suicide jokes. On the final night before he lost his memory, he could be heard in his room at the Whirling screaming "I DON'T WANT TO BE THIS KIND OF ANIMAL ANYMORE" while listening to The Smallest Church in Saint-Saens on loop.
