Biography
Cyril of Alexandria was an Egyptian bishop and theologian, the fifteenth Pope of the Coptic Church from 412 to his death. He is counted among the Church Fathers, was a leading figure in the Christological controversies of the late-4th and 5th centuries, in which he fought against Nestorianism, and was a strong proponent of Theotokos as a title for the Virgin Mary. He is a contentious figure to this day, in particular due to his expulsion of Novatians and Jews from Alexandria, and for inflaming tensions that led to the brutal murder of the Hellenistic philosopher Hypatia, the extent of his responsibility on this being matter of discussion to this day.
