“Don Alfonso, King of Castile, was a person of great wit, but not very demure: his ears were superb, his tongue unbridled, more suited to letters than to the government of his vassals. He gazed at the sky and looked at the stars, but in the meantime he lost the earth and the kingdom”—Juan de Mariana, Historia General de España Exceptionally intelligent and cultured monarch, but mostly an unsuccessful one. For all his vision, could be quite temperamental and short-sighted, even callous. His pursuit of the imperial crown, attempting to take up the immense mantle of his relative Emperor Frederick II, whom he resembled in his intellectual acumen—if not political ability (Frederick was either an ENTP/INTJ 5w4/5w6 or 3w4)—effectively bankrupted Castile and caused a bitter civil war which saw his son usurp him. This stemmed directly from Alfonso X’s pell-mell disregard of political realities and his arbitrary style: a classic conflicted, turbulent INFJ 5w4. He was “wise” more for his intellectual sophistication and interests than prudent statecraft. Nevertheless, his political failures and misadventures aside, his legacy as a scholarly-minded and sophisticated ruler remains assured in cultural history.
Biography
Alfonso X (also known as the Wise, Spanish: el Sabio; 23 November 1221 – 4 April 1284) was the king of Castile, León and Galicia from 30 May 1252 until his death in 1284. Alfonso X fostered the development of a cosmopolitan court that encouraged learning. Jews, Muslims, and Christians had prominent roles in his court. As a result of his encouraging the translation of works from Arabic and Latin into the vernacular of Castile, many intellectual changes took place, including the encouragement of the use of Castilian as a primary language of higher learning, science, and law. Alfonso was a prolific author of Galician poetry, such as the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which are equally notable for their musical notation as for their literary merit. Alfonso's scientific interests—he is sometimes nicknamed the Astrologer (el Astrólogo)—led him to sponsor the creation of the Alfonsine tables, and the Alphonsus crater on the moon is named after him.
