Okay. First, I want to make it clear this is my analysis of the 2024 MOVIE version of Elphaba. It has nothing to do with the book or even musical counterparts, of which I have different opinions of and would type her differently. But this page is for her MOVIE interpretation, so that is the counterpart I am typing. Second, I want to make it clear that ISFPs and INTJs have the exact same functions. This makes it so both ISFP and INTJ votes honestly both make sense to me, even if that doesn’t make sense to others. For some reason, I think this fact is too often disregarded, but it’s the truth. It’s for this reason that if you were to put relatively healthy INFPs, ISFPs, and INTJs into a room, I think most would actually find the INTJ and ISFP to seem the most similar over an ISFP and INFP who actually have vastly different functions other than their main Fi and PoLR Te. INFJ makes no fking sense for the movie version like INTJ or ISFP do - I’m sorry; I know alot of ya’ll want it to be, but it’s just not. Obviously, this typing is subject to change between now and the second film depending on how they decide on showcasing the functions - but just based on this one film, Elphaba absolutely comes across as ISFP. I think the ACTUAL debate is between INTJ vs ISFP, not INFJ as so many incorrectly try to type her as (which I can only assume they’re trying to pull in musical or book versions of Elphaba where a case of INFJ can be made. But stop doing that. Because this film Elphaba is nowhere close to being an INFJ. Sorry, not sorry.) Elphaba has such clear Fi. She is deeply values-driven, and I see no Fe in her. Her actions stem from her personal moral compass rather than social external societal ideals or a strategic long-term vision (again, eliminating INFJ as being a viable option). She doesn’t rely on abstract theorizing or future-focused plans like an INTJ, nor does she exhibit any Fe whatsoever. Instead, her decision are intensely PERSONAL and come from within. Her Fi also explains her vulnerability (even if hard for her to outwardly express as is the case with many ISFPs) and overall authenticity, making her reactions feel super raw and ultimately the forefront of her character arc. The movie Elphaba engages directly with her environment and acts decisively in the moment, even when the odds are against her. (Se). She impulsively defies the Wizard’s regime after seeing the harm it causes, rather than staying and devising a calculated long-term rebellion as an INTJ might. Defying Gravity is pretty much the personification of Se, prioritizing engagement with the here and now. Movie Elphaba is often far too practical and impulsive rather than future-minded to be an INTJ (or INFJ for that matter). Elphaba does exhibit moments of Ni as both INTJ and ISFP do - but it’s more in an occasional way like an ISFP over INTJ. It’s more of a supporting lens than dominant trait. She acts based on her immediate emotional and sensory experiences (Fi-Se) with Ni adding context to her decisions rather than being at the forefront. When it comes to her Te- this explains her struggles with external organization and long-term strategizing. She reacts strongly to immediate injustice but doesn’t craft elaborate plans to dismantle the system. Her rebellion is passionate and reactive, not premeditated. ISFPs also tend to dislike hierarchical authority, and her rejection of the Wizard is more visceral and personal than methodical.
