Personality

What personality type is Haruhi Suzumiya? Haruhi Suzumiya is an ENFP personality type in MBTI, 4w3 - sx/sp - 478 in Enneagram, SLUEI in Big 5, EIE in Socionics.

(1/2) Haruhi: "**Have you ever realized how insignificant your existence is on this planet? I have. It's something I'll never forget.** During elementary school, when I was in sixth grade, the whole family went to watch a baseball game at the stadium. I wasn't particularly interested in baseball, but I was shocked once we got there. There were people everywhere I looked. The ones on the other side of the stadium looked like squirming grains of rice all packed together. I wondered if every last person in Japan had gathered in this place. And so.. I asked my dad. Exactly how many people were in the stadium? His answer was that a sold-out game meant around fifty thousand people. After the game, the path to the station was flooded with people. The sight stunned me. So many people around me.. yet they only made up a fraction of the people in Japan. Once I got home, I got a calculator and did the math. We learned that the Japanese population was a hundred million and some in social studies. Divide fifty thousand into that.. and you only get one two-thousandth. I was stunned again. Not only was I just one little person in that sea of people in that stadium.. but that sea of people..was merely a drop in the ocean. **I had thought myself to be a special person up until that point.*** I enjoyed being with my family, and most of all, I thought that my class in my school had the most interesting people in the world. But that was when I realized it wasn't like that. The things that happened in what I believed to be the most enjoyable class in the world.. could be found happening in any school in Japan. Everyone in Japan would find them to be ordinary occurrences. ***Once I realized this, I suddenly found that my surroundings were beginning to lose their color.*** Brush my teeth and go to sleep at night. Wake up and eat breakfast in the morning. People do those everywhere. ***When I realized that everyone did all these things on a daily basis, everything stated to feel so boring.** And if there were so many people in the world there has to be something living an interesting life that wasn't ordinary. I was sure of it. **Why wasn't that person me?** That's all I could think until I graduated from elementary school. And in the process, I realized something. Nothing fun will happen if you sit around waiting. **So I figured I would change myself in middle school. Let the world know I wasn't a girl content with sitting around and waiting. And I conducted myself accordingly.** But in the end, nothing ever happened. Before I knew it, I was in high school. I thought something would have changed." For reference here are the sx 4 and sx 7 official descriptions (PDB wiki, but just excerpts from various enneagram authors): sx 4: https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/enneagram/page/sexual-4-in-detail sx 7: https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/enneagram/page/sexual-7-in-detail Haruhi is a sx 4 (only other type I can see is maybe sx 8, but sx 4 suits her better imo). I find PDB's movement to type all Ne-doms as E7 subtypes unfortunate (heavily tied to the "contradictionists" who believe correlations = contradictions/that some enneatypes cannot be certain MBTI types, despite that enneagram authors like Chestnut, Fauvre, etc routinely denouncing such contradictions), especially as E7 subtypes often do not accurately describe many characters' motivations. The goal of E7 is to distract oneself from negative emotions, particularly boredom or fear. Sx 7s do so by embellishing reality with a fantasy or external ideal. Great examples of sx 7s are Taiga from Boy Meets Maria, Anne-Sophia from Tensei Oujo, and Tamaki from OHSHC (my argument for him here: https://www.personality-database.com/comment/9603980?profileID=1419). Additionally, one of the best deconstructions of sx 7 I have seen is Yuki from Gakkougurashi. With each of these characters, you can see how they use the sx 7 enneatype to distract themselves from fear, boredom, and/or painful emotions. On the surface, I can understand why some people might think Haruhi is a sx 7, she is energetic, she is into aliens and espers and the like, etc. However, we get the *explicit scene* that tells us why Haruhi does everything she does- she does not want to be ordinary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XE-qmHdZIKU. She wants to be special, so she tries to attract interesting, out-of-this world things by trying crazy things. Haruhi's actions are not because she wants to distract herself from negative emotions, but because she wants to be special. sx 4 also explains Haruhi's jealousy and actions towards Mikuru, as seen in this scene: https://youtu.be/HKGjdbCb-Cw?si=obN4XSZ8sCq14_eG. Unhealthy sx 4s disintegrate to E2, they become childish and hold temper tantrums. Haruhi's assertion "Mikuru is my toy!" Falls into this disintegration. Additionally, and most importantly, the movie "Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" helps remove sx 7 off the table for me. (continued in replies)
