"He struck me as someone who was very sensitive. Wild, but very sensitive. He was actually a terribly nice person. A generous, kind person. If you’d run out of money for a cup of tea or anything he’d give it to you if he’d got it. But he was sort of like on his own. When he came in he’d go straight to his painting and do it. He wasn’t naturally a jolly social person. He was much more in a world of his own. He was very easy to talk to if you went up to him, but he wouldn’t go out of his way to be outgoing."
