I would argue that basil at the present time of the story is more aligned with enneagram 6 than 9. first, let's take a look at the core passion and defense mechanisms of both types. the six core passion is fear-- something that describes basil perfectly. basil is visually overwhelmed with fear, anxiety, and doubt in every interaction during the real world segments. fear is the motivation behind many of his actions, such as the covering up of mari's death or lashing out on sunny for trying to leave him. the nine core passion on the other hand is sloth-- where do we see basil ignoring his own feelings or thoughts for the sake of others? where do we see him overrely on physical surroundings in order to ignore his inner conflict? he doesn't. the six defense mechanism is projection. this is the act of unconsciously projecting fears, worries, unwanted thoughts, etc. onto others. because it is an unconscious practice, sixes often fully believe their own explanations for worries are true despite the fact that they are fabricated in their own mind. as explained by naranjo, "projection may be understood as a mental operation aimed at self-exculpation or blame-avoidance, and thus something in the nature of an escape valve for excessive guilt". basil does this ALL the time! his denial of sunny being the one to push mari and instead blaming it on his something is an excellent example of his use of projection. he also projects later on, when he learns sunny is moving and accuses him of trying to leave him again. nine's defense mechanism is self-narcotization. this describes the action of over-indulging in physical comforts to escape from internal thoughts or conflict. nines want simplicity, routines, and familiarity in the external world, avoiding their internal feelings and thoughts. they want to almost numb themselves from any conflict or problematic thoughts. basil is not capable of achieving this inner simplicity-- he dwells in his head and guilt. looking at the enneagram subtypes, basil is a perfect representation of a self preservation six. sp sixes are the most fearful and insecure of the six subtypes. sp sixes view their relationships as protection from their fear. because of this, they put on a warm and friendly image so other people will trust and protect them. as chestnut explains, "they look for a bond of intimacy and trust in their relationships, and they fear disappointing others, especially those who are closest to them. being warm is their way of getting people to be friendly so they won’t be attacked". additionally, "they have a passion for compensating for the fear of separation, which manifests as a warm and friendly temperament". this perfectly sums up basils attachment to sunny-- he views his friendship as protection from the trauma he has experienced. we can see the extent basil went to in trying to keep sunny safe-- from covering up mari's death to taking the blame for the scribbled photo album. he heavily fears abandonment, as seen in the way he reacts when he learns sunny is moving. he does anything he can to keep his friendships, his protection from his fear, with him. in general, basil represents many six qualities. he fears being left alone, as he feels abandoned by almost every important figure in his life- his best friend, his parents, and his friend group. he seeks protection in the form of a person- that person being sunny. basil is loyal to a fault. his combination of abandonment issues and his need for protection combines into dependency. basil displays the basic needs of a six, the need for safety and security. one more difference between type nine and six is reactivity. type nines are more passive, avoiding any possible conflicts and problems. they're more likely to ignore their own problems for the sake of peace. sixes are more active and reactive when facing a problem. at multiple points towards the end of the game, basil completely explodes with anger, sadness, and hurt. he literally stabs sunny's eye out during a fight. he is often selfish, yelling at sunny for moving and declaring that he is abandoning him again. he focuses on his own problems and feelings, disregarding what sunny might be experiencing. he doesn't ignore his own problems in order for others to feel better like a nine would, instead he remains defensive like a six.
