[1/3] 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐧𝐞 At a first glance, Ichazo’s and Naranjo’s SX1 may seem different. While the popular understanding of SX1 seems to lean on Naranjo, the original SX1 by Ichazo seems to be about a jealous person. Are both different at all? Add to the confusion that this is supposed to be the E1 subtype that is similar to E8. How to differentiate both? Fixated on Ego-Resentment, this ego arises from a sense of failure in childhood, when one feels unloved or unwanted. As a type that focuses on one’s reality and physical environment, E1 builds a sense of resentment towards reality, an anger towards higher ideals, such as the fact of not receiving the love and affection that each one desires to experience (Ichazo on Point 1). This ego directs reality around themselves, directing their resentment internally (resenting oneself for not being perfect) and externally (resenting their parents for not being perfect and thus not loving them). Later, Naranjo would revise the name of fixation into Perfectionism, which he feels appropriate to designate “a rejection of what is in terms of what is felt and believed should be” (Character & Neurosis). This perfectionistic resentment against reality creates the passion of Anger, which is appropriately called “standing against reality” by Ichazo. This Anger isn’t about hateful and rude emotional anger; instead, it is an anger that is demanding and critical to others. A passion of well-intentioned, overly virtuous, puritan demanding of others. The passion of Anger could also be understood from Gut type perspective. All gut types are driven by impulses and concerned with their physical reality. For E1, they have an inner superego that “filters” their impulses before releasing them outside, which makes E1 only releases the “correct” impulses. Their criticality, demanding, puritan behavior are the manifestation of their internally filtered impulses, resulting in a physically rigid perfectionism. It is a raging and out-of-control impetus that this personality feels in the face of the existential emptiness caused by the loss of the original condition of fullness (27 personajes en busca del ser). “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀, 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁, 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘇𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀: "𝗜𝗳 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲", 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻, "𝗶𝗳 𝗜 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 (𝗼𝗿 "𝗶𝗳 𝗜 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻") 𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲." 𝗙𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀: “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲—𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 [𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱] 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀.”” (Dramatis Personae) When this structure of compensating one’s existential emptiness by correcting the reality meets the relationship-oriented Sexual instinct, it would create a character that wants to correct the reality in the relational sphere. Ichazo called the neurosis “Jealousy” - union with another is always threatened by someone more perfect (The Arica Training) while Naranjo assigned “Vehemence” - a hyperdesire that adds to what the person wants, making them impatient and invasive (Dramatis Personae).
Biography
The Sexual One is the only Type 1 subtype that feels more comfortable with anger. They tend to express the passion of anger more than the other subtypes, even though they also sometimes control it. They are more critical of others than they are of themselves, although they are still self-critical. They claim connection to a higher moral authority and are more often reformers than perfectionists. They are zealous when advocating for what they see as right, for what needs to be fixed, and for their right to get what they want.
