having watched the new movie (2024) and the original (1988), i think there's definitely differences between not only the portrayals of the characters, but also what social issues they're trying to comment on and satirize. like, i would loosely say that the original comments on yuppie culture and the excessive and corrosive influence of capital, more than the new one does. and that makes sense, if you think of the relevance of that in the 1980s. i feel like, delia (1988) went from a self-concerned so3w4, concerned solely with the validation of hip "vanity fair" circles... ... to (2024) a kind of dramatic, emotionally performative... 2w3, approach? her insensitive relationship with ambition is eased (into a debatably more sympathetic desire for attention and affection), to focus on the thematic mirroring between her/lydia, versus lydia/astrid. that kind of relationship with ambition is shifted to rory, so that the movie can appreciate parenthood and family...? i think you could frame this as a difference in the social issues of the time. trying to appear as high culture (in the yuppie 1980s period) versus trying to grab and hold "attention" (in the influencer 2020s period). and i think that issue complicates, what it would mean to give the recurring characters similar types, between the movies
