Could someone elaborte so7? Because I have yet to understand how Ryland is a so7. So7s are usually labelled by the word “sacrifice”. Their sacrifice doesn’t come from a background of true selflessness but rather so that they can be seen as extraordinary and saintly by others. Ryland is rather selfish at first. He is terrified of death and refuses to board the mission, forcing Stratt to send him against his will. He doesn’t reframe or disguise his fear as something noble, he just prioritizes his own survival. From what I know so7s are active, they are moved by ideals that they try to capture in life, and that, generally, refer to improving the world. The so7 pushes aside, delays, or suppresses his own needs in order to gain acceptance and recognition from others. In doing so, he may end up sacrificing himself entirely and losing touch with who he is and what he truly needs, while becoming caught up in the pursuit of approval, hoping for a validating look that makes him feel complete in the eyes of others. In the movie though, he knew the consequences of refusing the mission was the death of over a quarter of the population, but chose his own survival over the world. That is not what a so7 would do. The need for recognition, appreciation and admiration from others is vital for the social E7. What we see in Ryland is not a need for recognition or admiration. Ryland is a middle school science teacher whose theories about extraterrestrial life and unconventional biochemistry ostracized him from academia. Despite his scientific brilliance, he is hesitant and unsure of himself, often choosing safety and comfort over risk and confrontation. I know this quote is from the book but his descicion in the movie is basically the same so I’ll post it here as well: “So that’s what I’m left with. Option 1: Go home a hero and save all of humanity. Option 2: Go to Erid, save an alien species, and starve to death shortly after. I sob into my hands. All I see when I close my eyes is Rocky’s dumb carapace and his little arms always fidgeting with something.” Yes. It is a selfless choice to safe his alien friend and the Eridian civilization but his motivation is not out of admiration or recognition. Yet, his decision is framed around a personal bond and not about an idealized identity or desire for admiration. One could argue that a social 7 might feel pulled toward the hero narrative since it aligns with recognition and validation even if that’s not the only possible outcome. Rylands choice however isn’t about being seen at all, his motivation stems from a need to save Rocky, which is more about personal bond and meaning. His motivation lacks several key so7 elements: - No strong sense of Idealized goodness: “I must be pure, good, helpful” - No repression of personal desires (he openly prioritizes survival) - No moral framing of his actions (he doesn’t justify himself as good) His motivation is rooted in fear, survival, and avoidance of pain especially early on. His growth comes through connection (Rocky), not through a need for admiration or social recognition. sp7 would make more sense (even E6 and maybe even E5 are more reasonable choices). Since sp7s are rear-driven, security-oriented, they foocus on survival, comfort, safety. If the sexual instinct is secondary (sp/sx), they can look more like Sixes (more isolated, overly careful, and strategic), resembling type 6 in their anxiety and strategic thinking. Rather than broadly people-oriented like a typical sp/so7. His character arc revolves around being selfish, anxious, scared of pain and then he grows into someone willing to suffer for something meaningful.
