Howl is a frivolous escapist, he’s enamored with beauty and perpetually cycles through manic depressions while maintaining that schizotypal distance between himself—the magical and ethereal, the wizard, Peter Pan forever young—and humanity, war, the militaristic gloom and responsibility of adulthood, death, ugliness. SX3, in its less pedestrian and housewife-ish manifestations, is akin to a catharsis of personhood and cultural glory, like an American sweetheart or an heir of Versailles. It’s an archetype completely misaligned with Howl’s evasiveness and insistence on striking awe in Sophie’s spirit. He is a very romantic & deceitful character (an SX charlatan, this much should be evident), yet somehow these traits of his have been misattributed to some distortion of the SX3’s “false image”, so let me again clarify: he is not representing the pinnacle of personhood, he’s not adhering to some cultural idolization, he’s not even presenting himself as a proper object of desire, he is creating a fleeting experience, enticing Sophie into a fairy tale away from the horrors, away from all that is ugly and painful. Howl barely even cooks. He lives in the filth and stays detached from his companions’ needs and relations. He’s inactive in the sphere of SP, and on the contrary his mental suggestibility and fascination with beauty is the most evident in his apartments, which are cluttered with ethereal & magical paraphernaelia.
