[1/3] 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 Cold, detached, mysterious person that somehow knows everyone’s secret. Or a shut-in person that hoards things because of their avoidance to social interaction. Or maybe that kind of person who just chills all day. What is the actual SP5? It seems that there is a kind of confusion about what this type is supposed to hoard and their hiding tendencies, and honestly this is understandable. Generally, Head types are harder to understand due to their abstract nature, and E5 is no exception. Let’s try to break down the E5’s ego structure first and see the dynamic formed when it meets the instinct of life conservation, aka SP instinct. The fixation of E5 is located in Adaptation instinct, also known as Head center. Types located in this domain concern themselves with their positions in the world, with “where am I?” as the main question of this ego. The fixation of E5, Stinginess, is caused by perceived alienation in early childhood. Characterized by withdrawal, this Ego has no one to depend on, which results in a need for competency and knowledge. From this arises the mechanism of Introjection: the introjection of self into the world (Ichazo on Point 5). E5 seeks to introject the world into their minds by grasping its resources as well as its energy, while at the same time holding on to whatever they “have” because they have no one to depend on. This mechanism is what we know as Avarice, which constitutes a Passion. Naranjo explained that Avarice is “a fearful grasping, implying a fantasy that letting go would result in catastrophic depletion” (Character & Neurosis) which goes in line with its fixation on Stinginess. The gesture of Avarice is holding back and holding in. On the other hand, this character is also giving up too easily. Being resigned, being detached, being cynical, these tendencies are the result of inner impoverishment. This constitutes a polarity in E5. On one hand, it is a restrained and greedy character, excessively holding back their resources and holding themselves as to not be “dragged” while at the same time they want to grasp other’s resources, out of inner impoverishment. At the same time, due to their resignation to life, they become phlegmatic characters, seem to be easily moved and influenced by others, out of their inner cynical attitude that “whatever I do, everything would stay the same”, accompanied with inner pessimism. Because E5 belongs to the Head triad, the passion of Avarice is abstract. It is holding back and holding on to abstracts and mental things. “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝟱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁. 𝗛𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳, 𝗷𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲, 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀. 𝗛𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹.” (Avaricia) When this passion of grasping the abstracts meets the conservation-oriented Self-Preservation instinct, it will produce a character that has the neurosis of holding back their “mental belongings” as a way to ensure their wellbeing. Ichazo called the neurosis as “Refuge” - a safe place from which to watch the world (The Arica Training) while Naranjo elaborated that it is a passion of finding refuge, erecting high walls that separate you from a world that can invade you, that can take you out of a precious little world that hides inside you (27 personajes en busca del ser). “Cave” is also another proposed descriptor of neurosis, used in Avaricia. We could understand this character as someone who retreats to a cave, limiting their needs and desires as a way to avoid dependency since dependency implies SP5’s obligation to exert their energy. A question may arise regarding the concrete nature of SP instinct. Does it change the mental nature of Avarice into something concrete?
биография
For the SP Five subtype, home is one’s castle and a place to retreat from the world and feel safe. This subtype is concerned about having enough supplies, which can lead to hoarding. Or the opposite may be a true, with a lack in allegiance to any geographical location, forever traveling or moving from place to place.
