[1/3] 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐢𝐱 The E6 subtype that’s supposed to be easily confused with E1 and E3, popularly interpreted as “the rule driven and seether” subtype. The subtype that has excessive concern with rules and rigidly impose the rules to others. Are those understandings true? Let’s check the E6’s ego structure and see what Enneagram authors said about this type to get the correct understanding about this type. Fixated on Ego-Cowardice, this fixation is located at the center of Head center, types that concern with one’s position in the world and one’s adaptation to it. Constantly asking “where am I?” question. Nicknamed Over-Adventurer by Ichazo, this fixation arises from a sense of being useless in the childhood relationship with siblings and/or peers (Ichazo on Point 6). This sense of uselessness creates worries that end up invading E6’s consciousness. This fixation is fed by the passion of Fear. Fear isn’t limited to phobias or common fear. Naranjo expanded on this further, adding that anxiety - fear without the perception of external or internal danger (Character & Neurosis) is more characteristic for this type. Therefore, fear in E6 is a neurotic fear. This fear and anxiety don’t need to be expressed in literal behavior. All E6 shares the experience of this continuous threat and alertness and a feeling of worthlessness, which leads to persecuting thoughts against themselves (Cobardes, Desafiantes y Fanaticos). “𝗧𝗵𝘂𝘀, 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂: “𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹! 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲𝗿. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲, 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗺𝘆... 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹! 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗲. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆... 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴, 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱”. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗹𝘆.” (Cobardes, Desafiantes y Fanaticos) When this structure of anxious mistrust to the environment meets the adaptation-related Social instinct, it would paradoxically produce a character that becomes too trusting with socially accepted ideologies. Ichazo called the neurotic need as “Duty” - the need to obey the laws of the group for acceptance (The Arica Training) while Naranjo assigned the same name, explaining this character as the Prussian character, the form of character with great love of precision and an intolerance of ambiguity (27 personajes en busca del ser). We could understand this character as someone that needs to cling onto whatever ideologies they find safety with, rigidly following their chosen ideology in a quest of finding social acceptance out of inner anxiety that if they don’t obey, their existence would be harmed. Unlike SP6 that may never be sure, SO6 may become too sure with their chosen ideology. The default mode of SO6 is somewhere between phobic and counterphobic, submitting themselves to an ideology and wanting to be the authority of their chosen ideal at the same time. It’s also different from SX6 that is more attached to their environment as a way to repel potential threats, SO6 is detached and more withdrawn, clinging to their internalized authority concept.

биография

This subtype copes with fear by finding a good authority. They think the way to be safe is to follow the rules of their chosen authority, whether a person, a system, or an ideology. They tend to be dutiful, legalistic, intellectual, responsible, and efficient, and they rely on following guidelines or reference points to feel secure. For them, uncertainty and ambiguity equal anxiety. They display a mixture of “phobic” (fearful) and “counterphobic” (confronting fear with strength) behaviors. They see the world in terms of black and white, rather than gray. SO6 Trait Structure and Descriptions: https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/enneagram/page/social-6-in-detail
