Not all the orphans/wandering poets/impecunious writers are 4w5 ! Between “rose” and “bread”, he chose the latter without any fierce mental struggle. Yes, everybody can’t totally get rid of the need of self-preservation and making a living, but many E4s( even sp4) tend to have a hard time giving up their idealistic, and often impractical and unrealistic dreams. Even when they finally choose to compromise with the reality and the world, they are inclined to feel angry, discontented and frustrated for their betrayal of themselves. But in him, his dissatisfaction was not obvious and intense enough to be an E4. He could adapt to the environment so well, because in the environment, there was something he “attached to”. And don’t you think his attitude towards Frollo is similar to an E6’s attitude towards the one he or she believes in? ) His intention was not to make up the deficiencies which always haunted his heart or mind, right? So Gringoire is more an attachment triad type(369) than a frustration triad type(147). Also, he felt insecure rather than deficient. His poor life of being an orphan for so many years, made him feel that nobody could support him, so he had no choice but to be warm and friendly, and adapt to the situation in order not to be hurt( much like a sp6). But such feelings as that he was inferior to everyone, he was abandoned, he was incompatible with the world because he lacked something important, he must know clearly who he was and have an identity, and he would have no value unless he was unique, was too weak to be perceived. Though objectively his childhood was exactly like a classic E4’s, subjectively his feelings, his core fear,and how he dealt with the relationship between himself and the environment were more similar to an E6’s. When it comes to why he looked like an E4 so much, I think it not only has something to do with his childhood and job, but also that his heart triad is 4, and he is no doubt an ENFP.
