𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫/ 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐒𝐈 (𝐌𝐁𝐓𝐈 𝐈𝐒𝐅𝐏) 𝐒𝐗4 𝐄𝐅𝐕𝐋 ------------------------------------------------------------------ "𝑳𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏, 𝒔𝒖𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏'𝒕 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆!" - Cheryl Mason to Claudia (SX4 > SP9) One of the biggest personality traits that Cheryl has is her fiery temper, one of which she uses to berate people or things that frustrate her (such as Douglas, Vincent and Claudia) which she uses to hide away her own feelings of pain. She has a harsh and aggressive personality, in which the only people who see a softer side of her are her father, and Douglas later on in the story. This trait immediately separates her from other protagonists of the Silent Hill franchise, such as Harry, James and Henry. She has no issue letting her anger do the talking, and whenever an emotional spillover occurs, the people around her are the first to hear about it. This directly goes against the trait structure of the SP 9, which posits them usually as being "emotionally blunted" individuals, who have no confidence over their own emotions, and do not engage with them often, in order to avoid potential conflict. Of course, much of her identity crisis can be a result of her status as being the reincarnation of Alyssa, but I do think that Cheryl struggles with an underlying sense of melancholy, and finding her place in a world. At the age of 17, she has struggled with substance abuse (such as her experience of being a smoker, and mentioning having experienced hangovers in the past). She does not mention having close friends or family, (and begins the game sitting in a diner alone, sleeping at a table) outside of Harry Mason, her surrogate father; and it's likely that due to Harry's protectiveness over his daughter, Cheryl was unable to make friends in the same way many people her age would. Alongside her past (unbeknownst to her) as an incarnation of Alyssa; she likely always felt that something was "off" and "different," with her. While everyone else seemed to have a normal life, it would be easy to assume that for someone like Cheryl, who has to take all these extra precautions to be safe, and perhaps is struggling with an existential crisis herself, likely feels that she is lacking something that others possess. A peace, or acceptance of who they are. As such I think Cheryl fits E4 far better than E9. But unlike, say, the SP4, the SX4 tends to have their emotions easily altered, and this is shown with Heather a few times. Despite her fiery temper, impulsivity and even violent tendencies, she can be witty and humorous, even in emotionally volatile circumstances, where moments ago she was berating someone for murdering their father, or killing a demonic God. This fits the SX4s "passion for intensity" and they use this as a way to ignore their lack. "𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘, 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒏?" (SX4 > E6) To address the E6 typings for Cheryl, while it can be easy to type an individual as an E6 because they are in perilous circumstances (I myself previously typed her as such), throughout the game, when does she project her fears onto other people as a defence mechanism? When Cheryl confronts someone, there is no fear, and she does not change her behaviour to address that fear. She also does not need a strong-figure to follow (the fixation of "cowardice"), unlike an E6 which wants an authority figure to replace the love of the parent. Instead, she follows people and adopts surrogate figures based on unique 1-to-1 relationships. When she gets angry, it is not because she is attacking a potential threat before it manifests (as in the case of a SX6), instead, it is of genuine hatred for that individual. Any kid (or adult for that matter) would be terrified in her situation, but when it comes to people, she has no qualms feeling intense hatred for those who get in her way (such as Vincent and Claudia).
