𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐄 - 𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅-𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐄𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐔𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 (1/3) Although I understand why people are typing Nicole as a self-preservation seven, she fits the self-preservation eight notably more. I think one of the main reasons why people type Nicole as a self-preservation seven rather than a self-preservation eight is because she doesn’t use physical aggression in confrontations; rather, she uses words and manipulation to get her way. However, I think that the idea of an Eight (and someone in the gut triad) needing to use physical violence to be of the type is a bit ridiculous. It feels like people are taking these descriptions too literally; the desire for physical pleasure does not mean interest in physical violence. “Physical” as depicted here is simply related to the material world. The core eight’s lust (passion) and rebellion (fixation) are not necessarily stated to be associated with engaging in physical conflict. Lust, as Naranjo describes it, is essentially physical intensity (NOT necessarily associated with physical violence!!). ➣ “I will therefore use the word “lust” to denote a passion for excess, a passion that seeks intensity, not only through sex, but in all manner of stimulation: activity, anxiety, spices, high speed, the pleasure of loud music, and so on.” And this description fits Nicole to a tee. All Nicole cares about is in-the-moment satisfaction and intensity, which can be seen in several instances such as her addiction to drugs, desire to start conflict, and need to dominate the people around her. For example, her relationship with Ari is all about her wanting intensity and being able to have someone bow down to her. The E8's fixation—vengeance—also doesn’t have to be related to violence or physical conflict. The E8 seeks autonomy and rebels against structure, traditions, social norms, and authority. This describes Nicole perfectly. I will elaborate on this further along in the argument. On top of this, Naranjo describes the E8’s vengeance and lust as such: ➣ “Lust is a search for an intensity in life that will drown out the noise of an empty existence, becoming characters who take from others as much as they need to take, building a thick psychological wall around them so that nothing passes through. This is their way of achieving artificial satisfaction, barreling through life with intensity and insensitivity. However, underlying this, and subsequently motivating it, is an orientation to existential indolence, which turns the E8 into a visceral and realistic character.” This is EXTREMELY accurate to Nicole; she is the epitome of a nihilist who attempts to achieve satisfaction through looking for intensity and behaving insensitively. Her nihilism is part of why she’s such a realistic character (a realistic character as in someone focused on the concrete, not similar to someone in the real world). And her using her words and manipulation to get through life doesn’t mean that she can’t be an E8. She expresses her lust through her language and actions that don’t have to be directly associated with physical violence. However, some people might argue that the gut triad is focused on physical movement and aggression. While this is true, it doesn’t mean that the gut triad constantly uses physical violence. Physical movement is more so related to taking impulsive actions and actively engaging in the physical moment, which Nicole does often. Moving on to the core Seven and, more specifically, the self-preservation seven, Naranjo describes the core type’s narcissism as “maintained by an intellectual apparatus.” Simply put, they are a charlatan. They try to appear more intellectual than they actually are in order to charm people. I used these characters as examples of the self-preservation Seven’s charlatanism in my argument for Paimon (Genshin), and I’m going to bring them up here as well. My first example is Dr. Facillier from Disney’s Princess and the Frog; he’s someone who presents himself as very skillful & knowledgeable in the world of voodoo, changing peoples’ futures and meddling with dark magic. He claims to have the ability to make peoples’ lives "better" when in reality he has no intention of doing so. Another good example of a charlatan is Sampo from Honkai Star Rail. He’s charming, but his charm is deceptive—he uses his cunning charisma to lure in the trailblazer, pretends to have certain knowledge but ends up being a complete fraud. Nicole isn’t like either of these characters. She doesn’t deceive people or charm them using intellect; it’s safe to say that she doesn’t care about charming people in general. She’s very upfront, says what’s on her mind and not caring in the slightest whether people like her and what she has to say or not.
