What personality type is Hua Cheng? Hua Cheng is an ISTP personality type in MBTI, 8w7 - sx/sp - 684 in Enneagram, RLUEI in Big 5, SLE in Socionics.
hello! this is my second argument against hua cheng’s sx8 typing. this will have spoilers for the whole novel and it will be long cause I’m insane about tgcf. I’m not going to touch on the whole “lsi can’t be e8” debate as “all combos are possible” people will focus on that rather than my actual argument which I don’t want. I can vaguely see why people type him sx8 if they have no knowledge of how the subtypes work, as in seeing him as 8 core and how he’s definitely sx instinct (no one’s denying that ahah) but that’s not how the enneagram works. both of those matter, of course, but the way they work together is what defines the subtypes and sx8 is very much not hua cheng, plus he fits sx6 soooo well. my argument will have 2 main parts: why I think he is sx6 and why I think he’s not sx8 with a mini section at the end about the rest of his typology. why hua cheng is sx6: according to the sexual 6 in detail from pdb wiki: sx6 is “a character with underlying attitude of self-doubt regarding their sexual attractiveness and their desirability or a self-doubt regarding their own strength.” and “Fundamentally they are afraid that they will not be loved, and this is where their passion of fear shows up most strongly. They are afraid to make intimate contact with another, and try to hide their fear behind exaggerating their strength (in the males) or their beauty (in the females).” “self-doubt regarding their sexual attractiveness” definitely is something that fits with hua cheng a character. at the start of the novels, hua cheng changed into his san lang from to meet xie lian because he was afraid xie lian would think he was ugly. after xl ‘discovers’ san lang is hua cheng he asks to see his real form and hua cheng replies: “What if I’m discoloured, disfigured, ugly, monstrous and horrible, what will you do?” hua cheng is canonically one of the most attractive characters, with xie lian very frequently complimenting his appearance inside his head. yet despite this, hc is very afraid of what xl will think when he sees his real face. for the second quote “Fundamentally they are afraid that they will not be loved, and this is where their passion of fear shows up most strongly.” xie lian was very clearly in love with hua cheng for most of the novel. from the events of the coffin scene, the ‘sharing spiritual energy’, the ‘gege let’s get married’ scene, his awkward reaction after giving him cpr, the way he constantly defends hc to other heavenly officials, saying hc’s child form looks like his son, implying he was jealous of hc’s beloved and saying he wished he could’ve seen him at his worst to name a few. his feelings were really quite obvious and hua cheng should have figured he felt the same way, however in the confession scene hc fully believed xie lian would hate him and reject him. he asked xl not to even bother telling him his answer as he was convinced his answer would be no, and when xl refused, he was described: “He was like a criminal on death row waiting for his sentence and he closed his eyes.” as well as his voice cracking, taking a deep breath (despite not needing air) and being ‘tragically pale’. now for the self-doubt regarding his strength, hc is one of the strongest characters in the novel which is a thing far more tangible and easier to prove than attractiveness so there’s not much room for doubt there. he’s strong and he knows it. however, when he was trapped in his kid form, he was anguished at the thought of being weak and forcing xl to protect him instead of the other way around. if he is not in a situation where he can flaunt his strength to protect xie lian in every way he can, he feels insecure and miserable, like he’s worth nothing. “Your Highness, I have to be the strongest. I have to become stronger than anyone else. Only then can I…” this is a very sx6 mentality. “In intimate relationships, they sign a tacit non-aggression pact. When the Sexual E6 decides to accept the other in his intimacy, he is very loyal; sometimes of a blind and inexplicable loyalty.” hua cheng is openly aggressive to literally every character in the novel except xie lian, despite being strong and powerful he never once holds that over xl, his only desire being to protect him. even from the time he was hong hong-er, he hated guoshi and mu qing and tried to hurt them as they tried to take him away from xl, yet with xie lian all he did was hug him and cry into his robes. part 1/4
Biography
Hua Cheng (花城, Huā Chéng), also referred to as San Lang (三郎, Sān Láng), is the deuteragonist and main love interest in Heaven Official's Blessing. As one of the Four Great Calamities, Hua Cheng is known as the richest and most dangerous of the three Devastation class Demons. One learns to fear the silver butterflies and blood rains for they are the heralds of his presence. He's also known as the Scourge of Heaven, Ghost King (鬼王, Guǐ Wáng) and Crimson Rain Sought Flower (血雨探花, Xuè Yǔ Tàn Huā).
