Biography
With the admixture of thinking, such people tend to produce or to believe in categories. However, these principles are acquired on the basis of inadequate empirical material, for their thinking only functions following sensation. For the same reason they are much given to deduction; that is, they arc prepared to explain the individual case by deducing from general laws. Although their theories have an anthropomorphic or mythological touch, they often produce unusual and original ideas. A case that springs to mind is Paracelsus. Then there is the amusing example of Friedrich Theodor Vischer (1807-1887), who founded a serious aesthetic movement, only to make fun of it in a novel. In the novel, for example, he allocates the Greek antas temple to the “mixture of catarrh and chilblain styles.” and the Peripteros to the ”purely catarrh style.” His fascination with the “pitfalls of the object” can also be understood in this way.
