Haruki Shiga MBTI Personality Type
Personality
What personality type is Haruki Shiga? Haruki Shiga is an INTJ personality type in MBTI, 5w4 - sp/sx - 594 in Enneagram, RCOEI in Big 5, ILI in Socionics.
Haruki is an INTJ. The confusion between INTJ and ISTJ is understandable, because from the outside, adolescent INTJs are almost indistinguishable from adolescent ISTJs. In adolescence, INTJs and ISTJs awaken to the fact that the Fe world is a real thing. That world is a mystery to them, but in adolescence they are forced to face the fact that learning to navigate that world is a necessity. Without the ability to understand that world via an inherent sense of Fe, the strongest and most generally applicable tool at their disposal is Si. If you can't naturally "read the room" via Fe and know what to do, the next best choice is to act in accordance with Si tradition. Adolescent INTJs are essentially bumbling around in "Fe space" trying to be ISTJs. It's no wonder that lots of people are misreading Haruki as an ISTJ. But try as they might, INTJs simply aren't ISTJs. In particular, they don't have the ISTJs' remarkable memory database. If you put an INTJ and an ISTJ into a Fe situation that is outside the norm, the ISTJ is far more likely to be able to access memory data that provides them with guidance to an acceptable response. A personal experience from long ago, a scrap of barely-noticed-at-the-time conversation, or something they read once upon a time-- an ISTJ is likely to be able to come up with something from their memory to help them navigate almost any situation. INTJs simply don't have that same kind of memory bandwidth, and so INTJs are far more likely to come up empty in an unforeseeable Fe situation. The movie served up such a situation by having Haruki find Sakura's diary at the start of the story. An outside-the-norm situation, and Haruki blanked. Very INTJ, very not-ISTJ. That's not definitive, though. It's possible that he was an ISTJ whose database just happened to be deficient in that one particular area. For a more definitive answer, we need to look at the relationship between Haruki and Sakura. In particular, why was Sakura interested in Haruki at all? She answered that question explicitly. Her definition of herself and most people's definition of themselves came from other people. Either via their direct real-time connections to others via Fe interpersonal bonds or via their indirect reaching-back-in-time connections to others via Si bonds of tradition/history/culture. Sakura's interest in Haruki came from the fact that his definition of himself didn't come from others. Haruki's lack of connections to their classmates showed his lack of Fe, his inability to respond after reading her diary at the hospital showed his lack of Si. Without Fe or Si, his sense of self had to come entirely from within. So there is no way that Haruki was an ISTJ who just happened to lack the database entry necessary to Si respond after reading Sakura's diary at the start of the film. If he were actually an Si dom, Sakura would have sensed that sooner or later. Since her interest in him was dependent on him lacking of Si, if Haruki had actually been an ISTJ instead of an INTJ, Sakura would never have pushed so hard to get to know him in the first place. So what did Sakura find so interesting about someone whose sense of identity came entirely from within? Think about what it means to face death as someone whose sense of self comes from her bonds to others. If her existence comes from her connection to others, then there isn't even the possibility of an afterlife. Death will sever those connections, and her identity will simply unravel. From the beginning, I think Sakura took great comfort from learning how Haruki's sense of self worked and then applying that learning to expand/complete her own sense of self. That act of self discovery/creation made an afterlife seem possible and helped ease her fear of death. And of course, from that start, their relationship blossomed.
