Momiji Sohma MBTI Personality Type
Personality
What personality type is Momiji Sohma? Momiji Sohma is an ENFP personality type in MBTI, 7w6 - so/sx - 792 in Enneagram, SCUAI in Big 5, IEE in Socionics.
[1/5] Why Momiji is a 7 and not a 9 core «Idiots are useful. Treasure them from now on. Even if other people think they’re idiots, as long as you don’t then just treasure them and take care of them. That’s all. This is just like the Most Foolish Traveler. It’s a story. Want to hear it ? Once you hear it, you’ll definitely want to go see Tohru.» Interestingly enough, Momiji introduces to furuba a very 9 way of seeing the world : The Most Foolish Traveler, and most importantly his personal interpretation of the story. That story is used multiple times to refer to Tohru, and by virtue of their parallels, to Kureno as well. It is very reminiscent of type 9, given the character’s tendency to completely ignore his own desires and wants. There is this sense that the foolish traveler has lost what he personally wants and has fallen asleep to himself, giving so much of himself away that he is left with nothing at all. It’s especially appropriate for a so9, who participates in their community as much as possible to earn their belonging, without ever stopping to consider themselves. However, as the previous quote demonstrates, Momiji himself doesn’t relate himself to the character. He gets where he comes from, he understands in some ways (since he is still 9-fixed), but he is never compared directly to the foolish traveler. I, in part, believe that it is because his goodness, and his selflessness, don’t come from the same place as that of a 9. The issue in him isn’t that he takes on others people's desires so much that he forgets his own (which would be the case of a so9 like Tohru). It is that he believes himself selfish to have those desires and therefore refuses to express them too often (especially if they are desires that could hurt someone else where he to try to make them real, relating to the social 7’s fear of exploitativeness). Now I’m not saying a 9 has to relate to the traveler, but I think it is an interesting bit of info most people forget, which turns me away from 9 core for him. While I understand where the 9 consensus comes from, I personally believe that typing Momiji as a core 9 is misunderstanding his character a bit, and that a 7 core fits him a lot better, especially later on in the story. I’m not going to fight the assertion that his gut type is 9, but mostly try to recontextualize and explain my reasoning as to why Momiji being a core 7 as opposed to a core 9 makes a lot more sense. (As an aside, please note I don’t particularly care about the current debate on whether or not xNFP can be 9 core. This argument is focused on why I think Momiji doesn’t work as one, not about the theory, so don’t take this post as an attack based on this idea.) Most of the 9s arguments come from his relationship with his family and his tendency to erase his own needs and wishes for them (and later on, him giving up on Tohru arguably fits this tendency). However, I don’t think this behavior has to indicate a core 9, since it can just as easily be because he has both a 9 and a 2 fix (both types having a tendency to erase their own needs in favor of others), and even due in part to a social 7 subtype. (which I’ll get into in a later part) My main issue with the typing is that, on a surface level, it does work. Momiji is very accomodating, kind and selfless, which is commonly associated with 9s. However, I’d argue that fitting the positive, superficial elements of a type does not make you that type. Momiji could be a 9 really, if he actually displayed the worst aspect of the type, which I don’t believe he does. The 9s trap is their tendency to overadapt to their environment to the point that they begin to be unaware of themselves, that they are «falling asleep» to themselves. Momiji, while accomodating, never does that. It’s very easy to compare and contrast with the other 9s of the cast, such as Tohru or Kureno (there are obviously other differences in their typings that participate to it but bear with me) : Momiji is constantly acutely aware of what he wants. When you look at the grand scheme of things, Momiji never forgets himself, in the same way that a 9 core would do. Haru is also a good example of a 9 I’d say (this time a Fi one like Momiji is typed right now), and it’s clear that Haru is a lot more «numb» about his wants and needs (pretty visible in his attitude towards Rin where he numbs his feelings until he explodes). 9s are fundamentally disconnected from their needs and desires in a way that Momiji never is. Narcotisation and the numbing of one’s feelings are not even his main coping strategy in the way it is for Haru. When Momiji feels sad or has an issue (and even when others have one), his go-to is to distract, find something good and pleasurable in the bad experience, and idealize the bad situation to make it more bearable. While 9s are Positive Outlook like Sevens, I do think Momiji’s outlook on life fits that of a 7 better than a 9.
