Sadistic, yes. It was until Katniss witnesses the true vulnerability that all tributes go through, regardless of being a career or not during that scarce moment where Cato breaks down because of Clove’s death. But a character who tragically is heavily manipulated by the capitol (in which Katniss truly realizes who the real enemy is). It was until Cato realized that he himself is a victim to the capitol’s scheme–a mere pawn to show the evident cruelty of the games and the continuous urge to keep the hunger games going. The best way to describe Cato in this case now aside from vicious and bloodthirsty is frankly: Naive. Someone who was brainwashed by the capitol for years in his district. Being constantly educated where the games were a thing for their district as ‘honorable’ and ‘noble’. It is a privilege for them to be one of the main districts to serve the capitol and so on. Consistently being drilled down with lessons from the ripe age of 6 to 18 to in district 2’s academy in training kids to be potential tributes. The same would go with district 1 and 4, ultimately being favored by the capitol itself. This is not just a privilege for those districts in being favored but it tightens the reign for the control Snow has over them. From rewards to the everlasting glory that the victor and their family will obtain without ever knowing what the capital can control even becoming a future victor. Cato is a character that greatly resembles one where their own childhood is taken away, brainwashed to the capitol’s satisfaction to keep the districts in line from not rebelling and changing his whole life into this one single objective. To win, its perspective is tremendously black and white. And it’s as tragic as it gets. In the end, Cato is a boy–pitiful as any other tribute the moment they enter the arenas to their death just for the show of entertainment. Now, this will be a whole run down on Cato’s character in depth. So this argument in general will be a lot more lengthy than the other arguments so bear with me. Explanations and counter arguments on multiple systems will be provided. Including a whole run down on his character and personality based on my interpretation of him. Cato is the main antagonist of The Hunger Games. He was the male tribute from District 2 in the 74th Hunger Games. He was the leader of the Career pack, the strongest tribute in the arena, and Katniss Everdeen's primary adversary.
