His very little appearances (and I'm including the Distortion's recounting of him and the leftover characteristics that it kept after taking him and before becoming Helen) are all very emotionally charged, especially in the shyly diplomatic side aimed towards "everyone safe and sound", where he seems to quietly try to keep things well, or to solve problems. He clearly really believes he's doing what has to be done for the greater good by being a part of the Institute, even if he doesn't understand it, and doesn't question those in charge if they lead him on with that belief. In 99, he tries to make conversation despite Gertrude being busy, makes sure he covers any possible points she could need and lingers in hopes he could be of help. He establishes himself as "less", not in a bad sense, but rather as in giving more importance to his boss's opinion and decision (his sudden "unless yodu speal Spanish" almost feels like he's embarrassed or worried of having made an assumption), being especially compliant and trusting, wanting to be helpful as much as he can. When offered to join Gertrude to travel to Sannikov, he's so so trusting and oblivious, yet altruistic and enthusiastic as he tries to do everything he can to make Gertrude (who he believes to be in need of care) comfortable.
