Dominant Introverted Sensing [Si]: Accepting who she is doesn’t come easily for Emily. Traditional norms seem to have more value to her than they do to her friends, which might have something to do with the household she was raised in. Emily enjoys decorating for Christmas and gets excited about doing it every year for her family. It’s harder for her to objectively see Alison for who she really was than it is for the other girls because Emily’s memories are subjective. She idealizes the relationship that she once had with Alison, and chooses to remember the good instead of the emotional abuse she was subjected to at Alison’s hand. Emily strives for a normal life. When Spencer and Emily go to a party on a college campus, they have entirely different motivations for being there. Spencer is all about the sleuthing and getting answers about “A”. Emily wants to go to the school, and has no desire to play detective with Spencer. She just wants to talk to sorority sisters about getting a scholarship. Emily usually has the most trouble when it comes to moving on or letting go. She’s resistant to change and doesn’t want to uproot her entire life by moving to Texas. Tertiary Introverted Thinking [Ti]: When Emily is fighting with someone, she is very good at pointing out the logical flaws in their argument. Emily needs time to think things over before making decisions. When she’s struggling with her feelings for Maya, she needs some space to sort things out in her head. Sometimes, Emily has a tendency to over-analyze things. She’s afraid that if she starts seeing Maya romantically, she might come to discover that she miscalculated who she really is. (“But what if I’m wrong? What if I’m not… that person?”) When everyone is telling her that Toby is dangerous, she can’t bring herself to believe it, and provides rational arguments in his defense. If he wanted to hurt her, he had the opportunity to do it, so why didn’t he? Toby had been nothing but kind to her, and she uses her prior experiences with him (Si) in order to develop reasonable arguments (Ti) when her friends attempt to crucify him. Inferior Extroverted Intuition [Ne]: Beginning a relationship with Maya is frightening for Emily because “everything would change.” Taking chances and living spontaneously isn’t really Emily’s thing, though she becomes more open to it as she grows and matures. Emily can think of all the ways something might go wrong, and is usually the most reluctant to participate in potentially risky schemes. Change tends to scare Emily and, while she usually isn’t very accepting of it, she is able to try new things or go new places on her own terms, such as when she made the decision to move to California for college.
