Ok, I am absolutely astounded as to why we are having such a hard time deciding between I and E. So I scrolled through and realized that one of the main issues is that people think friendly and socially capable means E, which, frankly I’m offended but cool. So now, I will try to clear up this issue without being too specific with the show’s plot while also being on the low with the terminology, so that it’s easy to understand. I will also be borrowing our lovely Gojo because he is popular, unanimously an ENTP (for the most part) and has been dubbed quite similar, in terms of demeanor and humor (I’ve seen the memes) to Urahara. To begin, what defines and extrovert and an introvert? Well, in my opinion, this is defined by how people spend their free time (how much they need social interaction) or how they “recharge”. Now that this is set, let’s see why being friendly and socially capable does not equal extrovert. Gojo can be considered friendly, however, I do not consider him socially capable. Every time he speaks, he literally offends or annoys almost everyone, which, to me, screams “terrible in social situations”. Yet, he is a glaring extrovert. Why? This is simple, whenever he is not on missions he makes sure to interact with other people, despite the fact that most people would not want to be in his company. I can’t recall a scene where Gojo has been truly alone, which goes to show how much he surrounds himself with others, regardless of how close they actually are to him. In comparison, Urahara, despite being friendly and leagues ahead of Gojo socially (which I attribute to him being centuries old and hence having the experience), I find his friends list to be quite lacking. Affable, socially capable, goofy and laidback, hmmm, this certainly seems like friend material. As an alleged extrovert with these qualities, surely he should be swimming in friends. Yet all I see is a cat, an old man and two children. While I do respect the diverse demographic, I don’t know about you, but this looks quite sad for an extrovert’s (with no glaring issues with personality) friends list. Now why does Urahara, literally only communicates on a regular with this small circle of errr… people. Why does he never leave the shop and explore Karakura Town as a friendly and social person probably would? Please do not use the excuse that he’s suppose to be hiding, as a man with Urahara’s level of intellect and resources (I mean look at the gigais), plus with the mission with being socially active and making friends should not be hindered from exploring the town and meeting new people undercover so easily. That would have to be some sort of joke. So, what’s the issue? Is he that scared of the Soul Society finding him? Maybe. Regular humans are just probably not his thing. Could be. Orrrrrr… wait for it, maybe he just doesn’t care to interact with more people than he has to despite being a nice guy. Whaaaat?! No way, I must be tripping. I mean it would certainly explain why he lives in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t go outside to touch grass. It’s honestly giving, “I’m a hermit and I’ve got no game”, but you know I could be delusional. So yeah, I think he’s an introvert, and a pretty obvious one too. Now as to why he is friendly and goofy almost all the time when he is seen with people (excluding past versions of him of course). As an INTP myself, I might be biased, but in my opinion INTPs are pretty friendly and goofy when in a space they feel comfortable in, for example, their home. Urahara spends most of his time, from what I can recall, at his shop which is essentially his home base. People usually come to see him, not the other way around. So even if these are random people, I think I would be pretty friendly and goofy if I’m at home all the time (as a secure and confident enough INTP). This would be my haven, I’d probably have a trillion back up plans to escape this conversation if I wanted to since I’m at home. So I may be projecting but, I think Urahara could feel similarly, “this is my homeground so there’s no need for me to feel uncomfortable around you, in fact you should be uncomfortable around me.” Also, to people who think the goofy friendly side is fake, I don’t agree. I think it’s just a facet of his personality he exaggerates, especially around newcomers to hide his more clever and analytical side, so that people underestimate him or are more likely to open up to him. Plus it just seems like a lot of work to create a whole new personality, which goes a little against the mantra of “if I don’t have to why should I” that I associate with INTPs, but this is just a theory so feel free to dispute or ignore. Anyways, this was just to say that I think INTPs can be just as goofy and friendly as ENTPs, given the right circumstances, so that alone cannot justify someone as an extrovert.
