A few years ago (after the first view), I thought the Narrator was INFJ; I admit to having INFJ bias at the time. The next few times I watched the movie, I began to see why he was actually ISFJ instead. The movie is about the Narrator tapping into his shadow function (ENTP)—which is where Tyler Durden comes in. Tyler loves going off on tangents (Ne) about his inner subjective truths and the way he sees things (Ti). As for the Narrator, he’s not very satisfied about his life but he chugs along with his day-to-day routine; I had the sense that he’d gone on like that for a lot of his life. He’s also very apprehensive about breaking rules and norms (Si). Narrator also possesses a consoling and warm presence when it comes to others (Fe). He likes to maintain harmony, and unlike Tyler, he is apprehensive about confrontation. It takes A LOT for Tyler to convince Narrator to punch him in the face. Unlike INFJs, Narrator isn’t very idealistic. I see more of the entertainment of ideas coming from Tyler. Tyler makes Narrator uncomfortable at first because Tyler isn’t afraid of speaking his mind and offending others because his Fe comes in after Ne-Ti tangents. Where Narrator would first refer to the established norms and ways in order to not disrupt social harmony (Si-Fe). It took ALOT for Narrator to break from routine and the mundane normality of his life.
