Don't be afraid to be afraid After watching the finale, I’m positive John is a six. In the Enneagram, the Social six is often described as the "Duty" or "Compliance" subtype, which of course encapsulates John’s early character perfectly. The so6 navigates life through a precise lens of structure and collective rules. In an average or unhealthy state, like he was early on, John manages fundamental existential anxiety by anchoring itself to external systems, dogmas, and authoritative hierarchies(the guardians, his parents, the military, etc.). Also, fearful of making a mistake or standing alone, the Social six seeks certainty in being a "good member" of the group, enforcing rules, and adhering strictly to moral or ideological codes. However, true health for the Social six does not come from finding an infallible system(and he doesn’t), but from undergoing a profound psychological shift(which happens in episode 5 and builds more and more in the final episodes): integrating toward the healthy traits of a nine and cultivating an unshakable inner authority. By moving toward type 9, their nervous system decelerates. They transition from a state of rigid duty to a grounded, peaceful presence. They begin to realize that the world is rarely black and white, and that human complexity cannot be governed entirely by rules. Consequently, in John’s case, his perfectionistic, enforcer like quality softens into genuine empathy, flexibility. In the way to integrating towards a 9, we see a shift in how John relates to fear itself. Rather than viewing fear as a signal to build tighter structures, John develops an emotional fortitude. That’s why it’s so poetic and right that he gets to use a Lantern that also has fear in it, because it all ties up with what he realizes. That courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to experience it without letting it dictate his actions. As Hal told him, "Don't be afraid to be afraid”. That was his biggest fear. Allowing himself to be afraid for once. When he embraces this new principle, fear ceases to be a crisis. He no longer wants to be a Green Lantern out of a defensive need for protection or because he follows his programming, but because he has evolved from a guarded defender of the rulebook into a pillar of serene strength, trusting his own instinct. By learning not to be afraid of fear, John finally finds the inner certainty he sought all along and thus becomes the hero we all know and love.
