Both Ga-eul and Yu-hyun's conflicts mainly stem from their abusive upbringings. In Yu-hyun's case, his adoptive parents were neglectful. This likely caused Yu-hyun's two conflicting desires. On one side, he wants to be "perfect" in every possible way, so he can be worthy of others' approval. Hence his social mask.
