Personality

What personality type is Nico di Angelo? Nico di Angelo is an INFP personality type in MBTI, 4w5 - sp/sx - 469 in Enneagram, RLUEI in Big 5, IEI in Socionics.

The way he's characterized by the majority of the fandom infuriates me immensely -- it seems as if people completely disregard the nuance of his character and reduce him to just being a typical 'sad edgy boi' or being Will's 'grumpy emo boyfriend' when he's suffered IMMENSE trauma from a young age, more than any other character, yet he's still such a kindhearted person. He lost his mother, who he barely remembers, lost his sister (who was also a surrogate mother to him and the only family he had left), was ostracized by everyone he met, suffered (what he saw as) a betrayal from not only one of his only 'friends' but also from the guy that he grew feelings for, not to mention all the internalized homophobia he dealt with as he grew up as a Catholic gay boy in the freakin' 1930s, and then was violently outed in that scene with Eros (I don't care what anyone says, that scene was repulsive and problematic, it should not be framed as 'inspiring' or 'empowering'), he went through literal hell all by himself, has PTSD and who knows what other disorders, not to mention that he is very heavily autistic-coded and most likely disabled (chronic fatigue and the like). He's just suffered so much it hurts my heart, yet he never strays from his morals, even if no one is there for him you can ALWAYS count on him to be there for you, he met Hazel, the sister he didn't know he had (after he already lost one) and accepted her so quickly, even bringing her back to life -- he's genuinely the best-written character in the entire PJO series, and this is coming from Percy Jackson's #1 fan. Seeing him develop from a starry-eyed, lovable yet naive (and slightly annoying) kid to a deeply traumatized and lonely child that was desperately searching for a place where he belonged, to a still traumatized but now less lonely and happier teenager who was finally finding that place ... it's amazing. He seems like a very obvious INFP to me, with the way that he always acts based on his morals, which he absolutely doesn't budge on no matter the opposition, to his creativity when it comes to figuring out solutions to problems (look at him keeping himself alive in that jar (?) by swallowing the pomegranate seeds ... not to mention all the innovative ways he used his necromancy/powers to turn the tides and aid in the battle), and his tertiary Si, which was quite evident in the way that he was most likely stuck in a Fi-Si loop for the majority of the series. Take this for example: "An INFP in a Fi-Si loop will get stuck on negative past events and begin to overplay them, reliving their emotions in the situations. They will stew in these emotions and become unable to look to the future. They will become withdrawn, and unexcited about the prospective of new ideas and possibilities, instead fearing that these negative situations will replay themselves." That is a practical word-for-word representation of how Nico was acting after the death of his sister, pushing people away and unable to move on (which is understandable, of course), going as far as trying several methods to bring her back to life only to fail every time. He was incredibly withdrawn and pessimistic, not seeing any hope for happiness in the future since his sister was gone and he had no home nor family anymore -- while I can see where some would see auxiliary Se, I simply can't see tertiary Ni, when Si is so obvious. Elaborating more on that, an ISFP in a Fi-Ni loop (again, going on loops since Nico is a very unhealthy INFP, so it'd make sense for him to be in a loop for the majority of it), begins to overanalyze situations and becomes increasingly anxious about the future due to immature/tertiary Ni -- they become stuck in their heads, unable to act on any of their beliefs and essentially repressing their Se, which leads to long periods of inactivity and no pursuit of new experiences/feelings. They will have trouble acting in the moment, excessively worrying about the long term implications of their actions + the emotional repercussions that will come from it, none of which we see in Nico. I haven't read the books in a while, so if there's anything you'd like to add/ask me about ... feel free! I'd like to make a case for 4w5 over 9w8 as well, but I'm afraid I need to do some more research (and also make a new post, 'cus wow, do I love to ramble!)

Biography

Younger brother to Bianca and son of Hades and Maria di Angelo. After Bianca's death, Nico runs away and teaches himself to use his unique powers. After the events of The Last Olympian, Nico spent more time in the Underworld looking to resurrect his late older sister Bianca, but resurrects Hazel instead after realizing Bianca had chosen to pass on. He helped in the search for Percy, but otherwise doesn't appear, spending most of his time either in the Underworld or Camp Jupiter as Pluto's ambassador.
