𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 The Rise of E9 Mafuyu has seemingly returned to PDB and so I am here to debunk these arguments as there seems to be a massive misunderstanding of not only what the Sexual E5 truly is, but Mafuyu’s character as well. While E9 is an understandable vote on a surface-level understanding of the type, I will encompass why it does not fit her best in this argument along with an explanation for E5. Open-mindedness towards differing opinions is encouraged here and I look forward to seeing how this is received. 𝗜𝗜. 𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗘𝟵 First and foremost, it is worth noting that the E9 is characterized by its lack of inwardness and an aversion to psychological exploration. To avoid their problems, they simply do not reflect on them as it is better not to feel altogether. Their strategy in life is to settle for life as it is and block out underlying issues. As a result, the E9 over-simplifies their inner and outer world. ✎ “Emotions are no longer important, there is no time to dedicate, there is not even space to experience them. [...] There is no room for these innate things. You have to provide for concrete things, the rest is just a waste of time.” ✎ “From what has been said it is clear that ennea-type IX approaches life through a strategy of not wanting to see, and this results in an over-simplification of the outer and inner world, a diminished capacity for psychological insight and also an intellectual laziness: a simpleton quality, characterized by excessive concreteness and literalness.” (Naranjo) These traits directly contradict Mafuyu’s character. Discontent with her way of life, she desperately seeks out emotions on her own and reaches for something more. She introspects and examines her every thought, which is commonly something the E9 would not bother with. To further illustrate, this type actively avoids looking into themselves and purposefully numbs themselves out as it is better to ignore and turn away from their problems as if they were not happening in the first place. ✎ "We have to understand the passion of Sloth as psychospiritual inertia by which the E9 seeks to stay in a state of spiritual ignorance, in the laziness of the spirit, denying his inner world and any quest that allows him to awaken his conscience. It is as if darkening the conscience allowed him to forget the original separation of his being and to hide any restlessness connected with the experience of the nuclear lack and the loss of the meaning of existence." (Naranjo) This quote right here is precisely why Mafuyu could never be an E9. The denying of an inner world and any sort of “quest” that would awaken this is quite literally the opposite of her. The E9’s mind goes unconscious when it reaches such a dark point but in Mafuyu’s case, she resides in this darkness and goes on said quest to find her inner being and meaning in life. For comparison, we can contrast how Mafuyu and an actual Sexual E9, Honami, cope with their struggles. In the Leo/Need unit story, Shiho talks to Honami about how she “plays dumb” and chooses not to notice her own thoughts and actions. This is exactly what the E9 does. Honami looks away and avoids her issues because it is better not to acknowledge them, turning a blind eye, than to indulge and disturb her inner and external peace. Mafuyu and Honami parallel each other in many ways, as they are both passive people-pleasers, but the way they confront their lifestyles is precisely where they differ. Honami chooses not to confront it at all, to go on as if everything is fine, but Mafuyu decides to isolate herself, dwelling on and searching for what she is missing. Mafuyu as a type that rejects introspection and emotions simply cannot be rationalized. Her character is built upon exploring her inner world, preserving and learning to understand her own minimal emotions, and ultimately turning away from the external. It is true that Mafuyu lacks personal feelings and a sense of self, but what separates this from an E9 is that they do not place value on such matters. With the loss of connection to their true selves, the E9 actively reaches outward, toward others. They cannot find themselves without other people and as a result, feel helpless when alone and *prevent* isolation at all costs. While this will be further elaborated on later in this argument, I assume Mafuyu’s dependence on Kanade saving her is a question here. I will briefly touch on this and say that if Mafuyu were indeed an E9, why would she be so reluctant towards letting Kanade help in the first place? Her coping mechanism is not to rely on others, but to push them away entirely to pursue her self-search alone. She caves into isolation, originally viewing her 25-ji bandmates as intruders that should be kicked out.

She's the lyricist of the underground music circle 25-ji, Night Chord de going by the alias "Yuki". Mafuyu appears to be bright and humorous. Many people rely on her; however, not all is what it seems.
