What personality type is Iroh (艾洛)? Iroh (艾洛) is an ENFJ personality type in MBTI, 9w1 - sx/so - 927 in Enneagram, SCUAI in Big 5, SEI in Socionics.
Iroh is a confusing and complex characher. I refuse to see him only as a “wise and old goofball which almost everyone likes”. He is way more than that. Nobody can predict his actions precisely. Because of that, I am more interested about his past and his character improvement than his current state. Looking at Zuko resembles what Iroh was like in the past in my opinion, since both of them lived their lives in the royal family and their mindsets are actually more alike than most people think. The fact that Iroh remains calm and always states “sorry he didn’t mean to do that” everytime Zuko does a jerk action might also makes Iroh remember his past. I don’t imagine Iroh being a jerk left and right but I imagine him being angry. Iroh literally catalysed character development of Zuko because he understands Zuko in a deeper level. According to the other people from the Fire Nation, Iroh was a vicious and ferocious general (Ti grip). We don't have good chunk of information before the death of his son, but the fact that someone like Zhao admiring Iroh rings a bell of who he was, there is no way someone like Zhao would admire a chill goofyball. They even mention Iroh in the prison as “Pride of the Fire Nation”. Even Ozai isn’t called that. Iroh had a massive change of heart and unlocked his spiritual side which made him capable of understanding the world and people on a deeper scale(Fe). To me, he just reverted back to his true self, freed himself from his family. On avatar universe, people with spiritual side will remain sane in the spirit world (Check Zhao in the spirit world). He immediately knew that Team Avatar acted on a goodwill and Zuko would be great fit to the team. He even knew that Zuko would be their friends(glimpse of Ni). On Book 2, he was genuinely happy that Zuko kind of joined Katara and utterly disappointed when Zuko joined Azula instead. When Zuko apologized, Iroh forgave him because Zuko found his right place with Aang. FeNi is really something to admire. I can understand the confusion between INFJ and ENFJ, but the fact that he can think of the best course of action together with bringing the best of someone is something Se tert would do. Ti tert wouldn't care on such thing. Side note: Initially Azulon(Father of Ozai and Iroh) planned Iroh to be the fire lord, not Ozai. Ozai had to plot “doing something unspeakable(probably murdering him and blaming Iroh)” to Zuko which Ursa(Zuko’s mother) prevented and lead to her banishment.
Biography
Zuko's and Azula's uncle and Ozai's elder brother, Iroh was once the heir to the Fire Nation throne, a mighty general known as the "Dragon Of the West". After the death of his beloved son, Lu Ten, Iroh lost his thirst for conquest and retired, developing a new thirst for tea. Afterwards, Iroh came to think of Zuko as his own son. When Zuko was exiled, Iroh went along with him to mentor and protect him. While he tends to act very silly most of the time, he is one of the most capable of the cast, and likely a match for Ozai himself. And seriously, Iroh LOVES his tea.
