He theorized with NeTi about the possibility of Vecna's portals altering the electromagnetic field. That confused Steve form the start, because he was using Se and seeing dots instead of connecting the dots again... Steve just assumed that the compass had problems and that's it. Se is like: "Why travel too much on possibilities? Let's just stick to the concrete fact".
