Personality

What personality type is Gintoki Sakata? Gintoki Sakata is an INTP personality type in MBTI, 9w8 - sp/sx - 974 in Enneagram, RCUEI in Big 5, SLI in Socionics.

Aight. Aight. This is the analysis for everyone who doubts his INTPness. First of all, Gintama (aaaah it sounds like "gonads" in Japanese, if you say it out loud in public someone usually mishears you and looks at you weird- I learned this the hard way) is created by the INTP mangaka Sorachi. It's not all the time, but INTP creators are infamous for making self-insert characters to share their benign ideals through to the audience and I think that's the case with Gintoki. Gintoki is one of the oldest shonen manga protagonists, he's around 27 years old at the start of the story- let's assume most of his functions have already undergone a lot of growth especially with the kind of life he's led and the amount of life experiences he has. He's a phlegmatic Ti dom, obviously from his overall demeanor. People are confused, it seems. "Where's his Ne?" you ask. His Ne is in the way he talks, like almost all the time actually. A lot of people would argue its just him nitpicking on the absurdity on the situations he finds himself in- but most of the time he jokes and acts according to his own free will and acts on his ideas: dressing up as a rip-off Yamcha at the beginning of season two is an example to change the pace, he makes a lot of meta jokes even about the change of time slots of the show or the difference from the manga and the anime or sometimes insults Sorachi himself, produces a lot of unprovable theories concerning the weird situations that denies the Se data present to be the punchline of the scene (his d*ck turns into a screwdriver, to avoid censorship he calls it a "analog stick", then from one borderline dirty joke to another calls it an "joystick"): He just says the jokes in a very deadpan manner and there's no laughtrack to queue you in that he made a joke. It's actually pretty obvious for the Japanese audience. I don't know if it's translated well in the English subtitles, I haven't checked. (does Gintama have an English dub?) Gintama is one of the most meme-reference heavy anime/manga in the modern shonen category. In Japan, we have this thing called "dajare" (駄洒落) and "manzai" (漫才) humor= and both of them mixed together is what creates an "oyaji-gyagu" (親父ギャグ) (dad jokes/old man gags- which is the style of comedy Gintoki and Katsura mostly have). "Dajare" is like the English equivalent of puns (I think), but it's a step up because it has to involve a kanji change in the original word or phrase and the manzai style has to involve what we call a "tsukkomi" (突っ込み) "straight man" (which is Shinpachi most of the time--sometimes it's Kagura. From time to time it's Toshi, Hasegawa-san and Gori-san) for the joke to work- and it's his inf. Fe move to bully the people close to him (affectionately and otherwise). That's a lot of Ne: nonstop Ne for 350+ episodes and 600+ chapters. He goes through a Ti-Si feedback but this isn't a loop for him, I think he's beyond the looping stages considering how fast he was forced to mature: fighting through a war against the government at a young age, losing a lot of people in his life via death or betrayal, all those kinds of experiences kinda explains why he doesn't always have the best reactions when people want to get close to him. His Si impressions don't have a lot of "positive" data to compare it to the present he has at the moment. His Si tertiary governs his lifestyle: he has a routine he doesn't like being disturbed, wears his clothes a particular way for his own comfort, likes to wake up the same time every day, has a lot of bad habits he can't break easily, he likes to eat the same kinds of food he repeats sequences on the daily to establish a sense of stability in his life (probably to overcome his trauma and loss). His violent streak is mostly just his inf. Fe getting angry for the people he cares about and he is just naturally strong- he was trained to be a samurai from childhood: he is skilled because of practice. It's a shonen anime and he's the protagonist, of course he can fight- what did you expect? People in this anime can jump from roof to roof, break concrete with their bare hands (and sometimes heads), and literally cause unspeakable damage to their environments despite supposed to being just biologically human, that's not Se- It's called "world mechanics". Biography

Gintoki is extremely lazy. He is often seen wearing a dumb expression on his face and spends his days lounging around reading Shounen Jump whilst imparting wise and sage-like advice to his younger employees, even though he doesn't actually know what he's talking about most of the time. Due to his poverty and unwillingness to do mostly anything, he is always behind on his rent and often runs away when Otose, his landlady, comes to collect the payment. He often blows all of his savings on Pachinko and other gambling games, which Shinpachi and Kagura often scold him for. However, even though he is lazy, Gintoki is quite dedicated to his job and tries to help people with the best of his abilities (usually in a very strange and twisted way). He is sarcastic and unattached but he values connections more than anyone in the series. For the most part, Gintoki is content with hanging out with his friends. However different aspects of his personality emerge depending on the situation.
