Personality

What personality type is Miya Atsumu? Miya Atsumu is an ESTP personality type in MBTI, 8w7 - sx/sp - 873 in Enneagram, SLUEI in Big 5, SEE in Socionics.

Hello! I’m here to try and convince you why I think Atsumu might be ESTP>ENTP. Initially I had him typed as ENTP, at first glance I genuinely think he could fit the bill, but recently after getting caught up on the manga I lean a lot more towards ESTP. My argument is gonna have some manga spoilers so be warned! Firstly, one of the biggest things I think of when it comes to Atsumu as a character and as a player is that he is a very intense person. He tries to perfect his sets to the point where he is fully confident that if any mistakes were made that it would have to be his spikers fault, not his. He has that demanding presence and pressure that I think comes with the territory of being an 8 core, in which he creates paths for his team to be able to achieve victory by pushing himself to be the best he can, and expecting others to follow suit. 8s aren’t all just aggression, but rather the kinds of people who lead by using their assertive abilities and competency to break through and succeed no matter what. However, we also see him take these wild semi calculated risky plays, and that where I think a lot of people see Ne since it’s so experimental for someone to do that. After seeing somebody else do something he wants to do because he thinks it looks cool (for example Kageyama and Hinata’s quick attack or when he learns to tri weild servers during his MSBY era) Atsumu wants nothing more than to do whatever he thinks is the coolest and he wants to do it the best he can, often times doing said thing immediately after with varying degrees of success. Atsumu can grasp things that he sees very easily and is able to replicate them without looking too far into the intricacies of it and he does so without hesitation. (Se/Ti > Ne/Ti) This excites him, finding new ways to play and excel because he himself does not think of most of these plays. He sees and learns them, perfecting move sets after initial inspiration hits. When he does falter, it sends him into a deep frustration, because it doesn’t feel normal to him not to immediately grasp something. In chapter 391 we see him depressed at Onigiri Miya, complaining that he just can’t seem to grasp this new serve that he’s trying, one he saw another high level player doing and wanted to replicate because it was cool to him, and it was affecting his other serves as well. He vents to his brother, and after taking a bite of Onigiri with rice made from Kita’s farm, he seemingly has this out of nowhere realization where the pieces fall into place in his mind and then we see him capable of doing what he was so frustrated with just a moment ago. This to me seems like Se wanting to replicate something, but his inferior Ni struggling, and then suddenly in this aha moment he is able to grasp and preform this complex move. (You can also make a decent case for Se-Fe loops here as well since he goes into these abnormal depressive states when he can’t compete or preform in the natural way he’s used to) I also think that the Inarizaki team motto is very fitting for him being ESTP too. In the same chapter he says “In volleyball, the past is gone. There is no such thing as memories. All you need is right here. All I need are my muscles.” I feel like this quote exemplifies his pragmatic “here-and-now” attitude, Atsumu lives for the moment and doesn’t dwell on the past nor ideas of the future. Even his goals are present minded or long term enough to allow him to keep getting better. If we compare Atsumu and Kuroo, both typed as ENTP 8 currently, we see two vastly different characters. Kuroo is conceptual, witty, cerebral and is a classic instigator type. Atsumu is practical, realistic, demanding and pushes the people around him not through strategy but rather pushing both himself and his team to their physical limits. For these reasons I think ESTP 8 can be much more fitting than ENTP 8. I’m sure there’s more I can point out but only so much has been animated and I know not everyone has read the manga, so these were the main points I wanted to discuss. Please let me know your thoughts on this as well!!
