(1/4) WHY VANITAS IS A SELF PRES 7 AND NOT E8 "Archiviste. I’m only going to say this once, so listen up. If you so much as try to drink my blood, I’ll kill you. Is that clear?" With a very significant amount of people voting Vanitas as SX8 recently, I will be explaining why he is SP7 instead, and why 7 core does apply to his character and 8 would not fit him. To do this, I will be expanding on Vanitas' character and countering points made for E8. ༺═──────────────═༻ (1) E7 book: https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/17Lp8yIe0gTUj7stnohnUTtSPa5rekrUibD4opRuU_fg/mobilebasic (2) type descriptions: https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/enneagram/chapter/type-description (3) c&n: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/878779204936794162/878780837552861224/Character_and_Neurosis_An_Integrative_View_1994_by_Claudio_Naranjo_2.pdf (4) triads: https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1gT4vRNTj2wfx_U_hDkLgXFDckQS9CX_rCJNklR9U7s0/mobilebasic ༺═──────────────═༻ DISTRUST: Starting in childhood, Vanitas continuously struggled with distrust and fear of Vanitas of the Blue Moon that complicated their relationship. He did not want to fully become his kin, standing by the fact that he wanted to be human and would not let others near him or his memories, physically and emotionally. This distrust continues throughout the series, but subconsciously, appearing as violent and cold reactions against those who try accessing his physical/emotional vulnerabilities, such as snapping at Noe in the most recent chapters when Noe tries to look at his memories: "If anyone tries to take my memories… no matter who they are… kill them. Kill them. Kill them. Without fail. Kill… Noe. Kill that vampire!!" Fear is the shared emotional theme of the head triad (E5, E6, E7). They see the world as a dangerous place that needs to be understood by them. For the E7, this fear needs to be avoided at all costs. While it is avoided generally, it does exist. Because of Vanitas' angry disposition, it is easy to assume he is driven by anger. However, an emotional theme of anger would not explain why his reactions come from a place of distrust. Additionally, an angry and intense behavioral disposition is not uncommon in the SP7 at all, and is common: "He will not easily allow anxiety and fear to show through, but he will struggle between his fright at the intense experiences and the feelings that move too much, on the one hand, and his aggressiveness, his lack of control and his maniacal need to feel without restraint, to live at the same time." (1) Similarly to this, the SP7 does have greed that may look aggressive and angry because of its intensity. This is because of the passion of gluttony, which all 7s have, but looks especially aggressive with the SP instinct. Vanitas regularly acts intensely, which is said to be reason for E8 lust. However, gluttony + SP instinct mirrors this: "The absolute priority is to satisfy one's own desires, with the feeling that others have to adapt to their times and needs. In the Conservation Seven, narcissism has a lot to do with objectifying others." "The inner feeling is that of a need for self-preservation. The crazy idea that I can “handle everything, I don't need anyone” contributes to this scenario. And as background, search for immediate pleasure without assessing the consequences for those around him." (1) If Vanitas was E8, this anger-driven aspect would instead be prevalent in him and be an underlying motivation rather than anger from fear: "Skepticism towards everything that is not concrete and tangible makes the world be seen as a lie. From here, we get anger that wants to resolve this lie through action or concretion." (4) This is not to be confused with genuine distrust, as for the head triad, it is the head that creates the idea of an unsafe world while for the gut triad it is the body that avoids what isn't concrete and feels anger towards what is not concrete (which is the ideal). LACK OF PHYSICALITY: Vanitas does not embrace physicality like E8 would. He avoids physical vulnerability very often (is also attributed to 3F in PY, go vote VLFE), such as avoiding being taken care of when he was wounded/sick by Jeanne and letting no one drink his blood, unless he trusts them to do so. So why is this against E8? The passion of lust itself. Lust is a desire for physical excess in the physical world, and is the reason E8 is a primarily sensory type: "Lust is mapped in the enneagram next to the upper vertex of the inner triangle, which indicates a kinship to indolence, to a sensory-motor disposition, and the predominance of cognitive obscuration or "ignorance" over "aversion" and "craving" (at the left and right corners respectively). The indolent aspect of the lusty may be under-stood not only as a feeling of not-alive-enough-except-through-over-stimulation but also in a concomitant avoidance of inwardness." (3)
