Personality
What personality type is Elizabeth "Beth" Harmon? Elizabeth "Beth" Harmon is an INTJ personality type in MBTI, 5w6 - sp/sx - 531 in Enneagram, RLOEI in Big 5, ILI in Socionics.
1st Point : Beth Harmon is an INTJ. - Clearly inferior Se. It's not that she indulges in her addiction to have fun like an Se aux, but rather uses substances to escape the problems that she clearly has - to which an Se grip is all about. The whole point of the addiction thematic is that it's not fun for Beth - she uses it as a way to escape reality, rather than to experience it like an ISTP. - Her obsession with Chess is entirely Fi. An ISTP would probably enjoy the game out of some kind of intellectual stimulation with Ti and Ni, but Beth Harmon sees it as a way to prove her own subjective worth to herself - after possible feelings of worthlessness surrounding issues involving her dysfunctional family issues. 2nd point : Beth Harmon is a 513 instead of a 531. - Take a look at Beth Harmon's reactions to her losses - specifically the first matches with Borgov and Benny. It's not her personal image in relation to an external audience that she first focuses on, but rather her own ability/competency to play the game. Her reactions are intensely critical towards herself for not being good enough to beat Benny. It is only until she plays against him in Speed Chess several times to prove to only herself and Benny that she's better - not towards an audience to which a 3 would challenge for the theatrics. 3rd point : Beth Harmon is an unhealthy sp/sx. - It is well known that the self preservation instinct emphasizes a focus on the self - specifically towards health and interaction with others. How could Beth Harmon be an sp, if all she does is sabotage herself? - Beth is clearly so blind. No desire to belong to a community or to support one, and another common overarching theme within the show is her independence. You can notice this the moment she rejects support to the Christian group that offers to sponsor her. She couldn't be sx first either, because while she does value meaningful relationships, she does not actively seek them out unlike an sx dom would. - So how is Beth sp dom? She genuinely considers the substances that she abuses to be helpful to her mental state, which is why she relies on them so much. An sp dom could totally be addicted to harmful substances if they justified that those substances were actually helpful to whatever health they have. Notice how her interactions with people (even the people she likes, like Townes and her adoptive Mother) are incredibly detached and cold, but reveals a part of her private worldview to them. (private feelings like Fi) TL;DR - Beth Harmon is a INTJ 5w6 1w9 3w4 sp/sx.
